This is purely fantasy but what if politics ever came to sl (or is it here already in some way or another?) Would we be parliamentary (as in UK and Canada) with Lindens acting as Monarchy and House of Lords? Or follow teh American method with Lindens as a senate? Or a dictatorship with me as your leader? (Just jokes!) What would teh parties be called and wha would be their mandates? I can see a Second Life Party being established based on conservative and/or republican strategies. PG sims and Mature sims clearly delineated. Big business given free rein etc. Nipples allowed only in the bedroom. Then ther ewould be a more liberal party. Maybe even a Third Life Party being more extremist. Would there be a proliferation of political parties or only one or two? Would socialism be evident. I know I would advocate and support issues that I do in the real world that would be part of a philosophy of life here - pro-choice, gay-rights etc. But would there also be pro-teens, pro-furries as a mainstream group for example. Would child avis becomes a vocal minority? In sl I am partnered to a Satyr (half-man/half-goat) and have experienced prejudice here as he has been asked to leave venues because he is considered half-dressed with his goat legs - I would fight for his rights to look as he pleases - would you? What would be our great debates? How would we reach consensus of opinion? Would the forum bcome teh parliament? If this thread doent really interest you. well so be it. I'll just rememebr you in teh next election!

There is already politics to a certain extent with the debates about child AVs, adfarms, banlines, etc etc, and it's probably true to say that there are loose groups on both sides of such issues. It might even be true to say that there are loose coalitions of interest groups, such as those advocating for kidAV rights siding with furries in their arguments with those who dislike them for being furry, but I can't see any place for party politics in a setting where ultimately there is absolute power that cannot be taken away from those currently in charge.
In RL, no matter how powerful a dictator may be, there is always the possibility of revolution or foreign intervention. In SL, there is nothing we can do to take LL's power away, and the only real way of forcing them to change policy is to leave or buy them out.
An SL with meaningful political parties would no longer be SL.

I agree with you Wulfric - but I can imagine people saying "well, that's what you get when you vote for the SLP. Just a kinda fantasy, but you are correct. It was just an idea floated into my head before I set off this early morn at 5.30 on a long drive of 300 kms to perform my job (and back home tonite)

*Checks calendar. Shrugs*
There HAVE been at least a couple experiments in running a democratic sim, with elections, council meetings and votes and such.
The first time they tried, I hear the owner of the sim picked up her marbles and left in a huff.

I have been, for some time, the Princess of Jeogeot, the southern mainland island. The title was vacant so I claimed it myself. My duties are to occasionally inspect the highways and protected land if I feel like it. I do have a ceremonial outfit but I'm still basically a just a rockchick!

Politics are surely the best evidence I've seen that humans are a primitive species and have a very long way to go. A more advanced race would have a way of allowing everyone to do exactly as he, she, or it wishes, without harming anyone else. SL is as close to that as anyone has come up with, though there are still plenty of opprtunities to harm others. I thinks it's on the right track though.

As was implied already, politics already exist here - they exist in every facet of our life whether we choose to admit it or not. All we can do is hope they don't get any worse.

I would go for a mix of both US and UK systems. The UK Parliamentary system is...well...boring. The only fun times are during Prime Ministers questions where the backbenchers and the rest of parliament are allowed to rip the p*** out of the prime minister and watch the worm squirm. Elections are boring as well... Now the US system during election is BIG, lots of BIG parties, drinks, money getting thrown around everywhere, but the system itself is dull...no Presidential Questions where the congress and senate are allowed to rip the predient apart in a live televised debate every week like they do here. So yeah, a mix of both
