Recently, I set one of my friends to NOT be able to see my on-line status. I opened the Communications box>Friends tab, selected that friend's name, and DE-selected the box that says show on-line status. Yet, this person logged on and immediately saw me on-line and IM'd me.

Does this feature not work the way you would expect it to?

The Friends list breaks all the time. Sometimes showing someone on that isn't on, sometimes showing someone off-line when they are on. And sometimes people look at calling cards to see if someone is on, or the Friends list on the SL website, or in groups, or sending you an IM (if you are not on there will be that message that pops up, something like "user not on-line";) or looking at your profile in search (if offer Teleport is not greyed out then that person is on-line, though you can grey out the Offer Teleport button and remain on-line). . ..

there are scripts that will show a person's online status, even if they have that unchecked, heck do not even need to be on the person's friends list

the only true way to "hide" is to make an alt and not tell anyone who you are

This thread talks all about the friends online thingy. It's a few pages back so wasn't easily seen. :)

Was there a button named "apply". Sometimes you have to click that before clicking ok in order to save those changes.

I'm not in-world at the moment so I can't check it out. Is there anyone in-world right now that can check it out?

No, there's not an apply list for hiding on the friends list. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. Lately it mostly has not been working.

Right now it seems to work:

* the other person is online already when you log on: they don't see you online
* you're online already when the other person logs on: they see you online

There's a JIRA on it somewhere.
