Hello GUYS,
we need some HELP here!
We would like to stream LIVE video into Second Life. We are forced to use a PC and have trouble figuring out how to do it.
We understand that we need a video broadcasting programme (such as wirecast or for mac Apple Quicktime Broadcaster) and a streaming server (such as streamhoster)
The questions we have is: -we need to use a PC (sorry but we do not have macs) but are not sure if SL can actually also handle any other video stream formats besides quick time in order to stream into second life? any idea? if yes which one is best to use? -is there any other recommendable software besides the slightly pricy wirecast? (we tried downloading apple quick time broadcaster for PC but it seems that only a mac version is available) -or how could we get a quick time format video stream to a streaming server if we only have a PC? -are there recommendable alternatives to streamhoster?
Thanks very much in advance for your HELP!
BEST, Potala Ling

Now I'm thinking to contact places where they have done live broadcasts even in some of the clubs in SL. One comes to mind is Jades Jazz Club. They have live broadcasts of musicians, maybe get some info there. Best of luck all!

Since my company deals with this and has done work for major openings in SL lemme tell you what we tell them ^^ For PC - Wirecast is about all you're going to find (if anyone finds something nicer lemme know) and yes it does do quicktime streaming to DSS (Darwin Streaming Server which is free to get) As for streamhosters, just do a google search and find one to suit your needs. You can contact me if you want to go with my company but thats your call and we always suggest you look around first before deciding as you might find something that fits better with what you want. that link flix posted is of great help and have used it myself, however you don't need anything besides wirecast and DSS (or some type of streaming server on a machine with a bit of bandwidth) for using a live webcam or desktop show.

$449usd for Wirecast, might as well just go buy a mac. Hopefully other video types will be compatible with SL in the near future, like NSV/VP3.

Your biggest problem is going to be your upload speed. Not every connection enjoys a high upload speeds. The calculation you must consider will be relatively a simple one.. size of data bit rate for the stream in kbps, times the amount of viewers you are serving, plus latency for any cache through the streaming server. As QT, through its many pluggins, can support a variety of formats, it would have more to do with whether each viewer has the same codex installed. 'Live' isn't a real term, there is about a 10-15 second delay between what you capture and what you see ingame.
