Hello all, I'm confident that I can figure this out for myself but has anyone got a solid method for uploading a video stream of someone's desktop to a server in order to be viewed in Second Life?

I'm going to be looking for a desktop -> video generation method and some sort of dns routing program.

If I manage to get it working I'll post how I did it.

Ok, I've got it working. You can see the results at 246,241,34 in Ever After (Zante Zapedzki's Mini Cinema).

I messed around with a lot of stuff including...

Unreal Streaming Server
Darwin Streaming Media Server
VLC
Camtasia

etc...

Much frustration involved with it but I've finally got a solid and easy method anyone can use.

1.) Download the UScreenCapture codec from http://www.free-codecs.com/download/UScreenCapture_DirectShow_Filter.htm

2.) Download Wirecast 3.0 from http://www.varasoftware.com/products/wirecast/download.html (evaluation is fine)

3.) Run Wirecast 3.0 and make sure that the input from UScreenCapture is selected.

4.) Make sure the encoding is set to DSL - MPEG4 and use the 'Built-in streaming server' (you can connect to a dedicated media server if you have one).

5.) Forward port 7070 to the machine running Wirecast 3.0

6.) Start the broadcast and use the following url to connect to your stream...

rtsp://put your ip address here/my_stream.sdp

Make sure that you're not using your LAN ip which might look something like 192.168.0.X

To find your internet ip address, check http://www.whatismyipaddress.info/

I have an xp3000+ cpu and this will lag my PC to hell and back if I run second life at the same time. I currently have it running on another machine (1ghz 1GB of RAM) and it uses about 97% of the cpu power. I was drawing pictures in MS Paint to show it off to people, no lag there. Movies have problems playing due to filters but apps like 3D studio max come out perfectly. I'm currently streaming a video of the system clock and performance graphs.

Here's a video of it in action as I haven't yet decided how long I'll keep the stream running.

It's as simple as that. Enjoy, donations are welcome. Check out my mini cinema (tell your friends) ; )

WOW, you are a quick worker, judging by the post entries, you cracked it in less than 10 minutes (allowing for setting up and posting the reply).

Have you worked out how much bandwidth you are going to need to multicast to say 10-120 simultanious veiwers? You may find the stream becomes degraded as you reach 80% capacity of your bandwidth.

If you IM me ingame, I can point you in the direction of a fairly cheap RTSP streaming service provider that could cope with more viewers, and have facilities for what you need.
