I'm seeing more and more influence of secondlife in real world: images, advertizing, videos, music, presentation - and a big movie. What impact will "Avatar" have on us? Will we get a population growth? Will we be swamped with newbies all looking like characters in the movie? Shuld we all look like characters in the movie for their benefit? Will it be a rich and beneficial time for us or will it change our world? Will we tidy up the trash filled wastelands of our suburbs and become computer-friendly greenies on an avatar planet? Comments from one and all will make this a To-be-Friday thread.

I'm not familiar with this movie. Unless it references SL or virtual worlds directly, I doubt it would have any big impact on SL Unless of course it tells people that they can have kinky sex in SL.

"Avatar" has as much to do with SL as does "Avatar, The Last Air Bender" - I predict zero impact. (And eagerly await both).

'Avatar' is such a generic term in computer gaming that I can't really imagine much of an impact on SL. To make the connection, someone seeing the film would have to a) be aware of SL's existence; b) be aware that one used an avatar in SL and c) choose SL over any of the other places where they can use an avatar.
Then again, typing 'avatar' in Google brings up a SL reference on the first page (the highest-ranked appearance other than the movie, the original term and the generic computer usage), so some people investigating the movie might just stumble upon it.

I don't know if it will do much for the main grid here, but I *do* think it will heavily promote interest in naughtiness with other vaguely human alien species... ...might give the space program a boost, in order to find aliens like these...

Saw the movie trailers, and, as impressive as they are, I really don't think they will have any impact one way or another on SL or any other Virtual Worlds. The movie isn't about virtual worlds at all. It's a sci-fi pic about using cloned alien/Human hybrid bodies as telecherics for Human "operators", so they can interact on the surface of a hostile alien world.

Escorts may see a rise in people wanting to have sex using alien avatars.

From: Janus Rhiadra The Avatars in the film look like nekos to me...anyone wanna bet that James Cameron is a visitor to SL ? Dont know about Cameron but SL is not so unfamiliar territory anymore. It's getting used so I think Lindens may be on to somethign when they suggest their usership is widening. Since I've been off world I have heard SL being discussed in different venues and I have stayed silent or acted gormless (which isnt hard for me) Some people were singing its praises as an educational tool at a party I was at. An they got kinda cagey about other aspects of it when I brought them up BUT on th ewhole I have heard "good things". I think we may be seeing cracks in the basement door as the Thing Who Lurks Down There comes into the disneyficant sunshine of "in" places to be. Hey, I'm here after all! I reckon we're gonna see big changes coming our way, and they wont just be shadows on walls and toys like that.

And they look like they need a good pinch to set them crying. Not sure why I feel this, but I bet they're very "green" and eat roots and acorns.
