I can see a good use for this if you are expected to be somewhere in SL and you crash, or your internet goes out, or you are elsewhere and running late. You could call you friends to let them know rather than leave them to wonder.

Since the thing gives out your real life phone number anyway, might as well call them.

Voice I'm fine with. It has uses in-world.

Phone Service? Um........ No.

I'm sitting at my computer with 2 cell phones & 1 land line phone within reach. And if either rings I'm likely to not answer anyways. :p

We've only been asking for an IM/Jabber gateway for this purpose for a couple-three years now. :(

The sound of life!

Unless you're of the (correct) opinion that children are to be seen and not heard, and find excessive background noise to be grating. It doesn't take much to get things right so you aren't the source of unwanted background noise that makes hearing the conversation more difficult, and failing to do so just makes you look lazy AND rude.

I'm sure that the statistic that 50% of SL users use voice is more about the magic of massaging numbers and creative definitions, than about a meaningful measurement of voice use.

However, I'm also guessing that the residents about which Linden Lab cares most (corporations and non-profits) are heavier voice users than the residents about which Linden Lab cares less (recreational users).

So even though I don't use voice, I won't fault Linden Lab for making investments to increase their revenues.

(I can fault them for making up false statistics. Why not just say this: More voice features = more revenue for us = more resources to implement the changes that you actually do care about.)

I am interested to see whether these new features get abused by telemarketers.

Assuming that they're making investments that will actually increase their revenues. Corporations no longer have much interest in holding meetings or seminars in SL, on the main grid, and large corporations really need completely isolated grids of their own to satisfy basic network security requirements.

Indeed, I think IBM is a big example of that... they run their own grid.

I don't know quite what IBM is doing. THey are doing a lot of R&D with LL, but LL had a "grid in a box" in 2005, while IBM seems to be trying to have a semi-detached grid... which as a network admin gives me the heebee-jeebies.
