From: Wildefire Walcott Oh, they most definitely are. The thing is, it USED to be that you only had to specify a different email address to get around that limit- but now they're obviously taking more things into account. And actually, this pisses me off quite a bit. I can name several places that have literally dozens of freebie traffic bot alts, but I- someone who pays LL literally thousands of dollars every month- am not even allowed a fifth account which I would actually USE. Hmm, gold farmers & griefers run hundreds of accounts by using disposable email, and yet we now seem to be limited to 4 alts per legit email address, I created 5 through the normal process all linked to the same email 6 months ago, but this must have been limited further. I guess so the bot runners have to have 25 disposable emails instead of 20 to run 100 bots

But seriously folks... here's my observation as regards the alt account scenario so far:
You can create as many as you want. but the gotcha comes when you attempt to link them to a paypal account or credit / debit card. At least that's what happens to me Every now and then I see a new surname that would give me a really cool firstname-lastname combination. So I go through the motions and being one of those types that like to have all my accounts 'payment info on file' [that's just me y'know] I attempt to link them to either my paypal account or one of my debit / credit cards. And they always fail :\ Boo-hoo woe is me, wailing and gnashing of teeth etc., etc., ad nauseam.
Linked accounts with common inventory would be a wonderful thing except for things like using an alt to check that you've set the permissions correctly on something you want to sell. So there would need to be a way to toggle shared inventory on or off between linked accounts.

From: Kitty Barnett I really can't imagine LL bothering to create anything terribly sophisticated to block someone from creating too many alts. Did you try simply clearing your browser cookies, going to the SL site and trying to create a new account without logging an existing account in first? Or worst case clearing cookies and doing whatever you need to do to get your ISP to assign you a new IP addie (often enough to just unplug the power of whatever they installed for a few seconds). The thing is, they lock up the avatar names forever when they turn you down, so there was no point in me trying again.

If you start work on a registration for an alt, and for any reason that attempt is aborted or declined, the name is still reserved for YOU to try to use. Contact a Linden, and they can arrange for you to be sent an e-mail with a link that will allow you to resume the registration process for that name.

From: Ceera Murakami So if they are at least trying to link those accounts, why not just insist on linking all alts to a validated Main account, and be done with it? that would require all accounts to have payment info on file. i suspect many people will not join if that becomes mandatory. gotta keep those 'new member' statistics up. also, as far as i know there is a limit of 5 accounts per email - per household - per REAL LIFE person. i imagine if PIOF was required for all accounts, camper bots would be limited. what that would do to the economy is uncertain. perhaps 2L is not willing to find out.
