what caps and from where did this information originate? [2009/03/18 4:24] Babbage Linden: and give avatars and allowance for attachments [2009/03/18 4:25] Babbage Linden: which will work like prim limits [2009/03/18 4:26] Babbage Linden: when scripts are attachments, they will request memory from the avatar's script pool An avatar cap coming our way soon. When exactly I don't know, but I'd guess tucked away in the V2009 roadmap somewheres. Its simple speculation on my part that caps on avatars in other areas will follow once we get used to the idea that avatar allowances are capped. |

Oh that is for the avatar script memory pool. and there will be a parcel script memory pool based on the size of the parcel. Those have nothing to do with the viewer and everything to do with making the system scale by being able to predict maximum memory use. Those are region limits. The one unfounded rumor that creeped out of an Italian web site back around April Fools day was a 10,000 limit on inventory for free accounts. Probably not a bad idea since people in business can afford to cash out $9.95 worth of L$ every month if they want a inventory warehouse. |

It was the avatar prim attachment limit BL mentions that made me go hmm! |

Yes. It was the avatar prim attachment limit BL mentions that made me go hmm! Not prim attachment limits. We already have those limits. 30 attach points 256 prims each. (Noting that at least one third party viewer has enabled stacking attachments per attach point thus overriding the one attachment per attach point) What Babbage was mentioning is a limit on total memory used by all the scripts in all the attachments. This way Mr. competition griefer can't come and sit on a rock in your region dragging it to it's knees. The biggest problem in my region right now is avatars heavily laden with mono compiled scripted attachments. This has got to the point a daily restart is required to clean off the phantom scripts. Hopefully LL will fix mono or remove it completely before fiddling with anything else. Only problem is memory pool limits is not eps or script activity limits so the griefers will simply use a different tactic to overdrive the host cpu as long as LL is not turning them over to actual real life police for arrest and sentencing to a certain fate in the hands of a big mean convict in the big jail. LL needs to get over their love of geeks and begin prosecution until the griefers decide to go to some other grid/world for lulz. |

And with all that is coming I somehow doubt we'll see little things like a new avatar mesh, avatar height displayed in the editor (which has been a huge problem for content creators and contributes greatly towards inefficient building and SL's generally poor visuals, ffs even Champions Online gives you this information), the ability to set and change animation priorities AFTER they've been uploaded, a neck attachment point, new camera placement settings, or an improved way of managing inventory.
There's a lot of great improvements that are coming, but so long as LL continues overlooking some of the essential things we need (like avatar height being shown right there in the av editor and a better camera placement so we can finally start fixing SL's scale issues and encouraging smaller builds) it's a bit much to say SL has reached 1.0 let alone 2.0. |
