This morning, after about 9 fortunate months of never being intentionally griefed, i met my first griefer face to face - right in my house. I was arranging furniture (without thinking I needed to lock my door while I'm home) when some dude with a giant cigarette for a face walked in and said something in what I think was french.
Stifling my first instinct, which was to say "what the hell are doing walking into my house", I said "I'm sorry I only know speak english well". Then they did something called "kaboom" and I went flying out of the house.
It was really no big deal anyway, since I landed at the edge of the sim not far away, but I am curious about his kaboom thing...was I orbed? And the cigarette for a face look seems familiar, like maybe I've read about this person here; might this particular look sound familiar to anyone?

I don't suppose it was that cigarette-face, was it?

Maybe it was just his own head that went 'kaboom', like a joke cigar, and you were just collateral damage.
With some of the griefing that's been described here, consider yourself lucky - or unluckily fortunate. Annoyingly, unluckily fortunate...

lol! no, sounds like you were not orbited - that takes a while, because you end up thousands of meters up.
Sounds like you were 'pushed'. There are many anti-push shields out there, some free, some as part of multigadgets such as the mystitool. "Push" can be turned of on your land as well ....
Also, if you are seated you cannot be "pushed".

For sure, this was just a momentarily annoyance. Its not something I'd even bother to report (although that was a creepy looking AV)

Sounds like the kind of thing I shrug off and laugh...as long as it only happens now and again. When I see it happening at welcome centers to noobs, though, I AR the hell out of them.

If it's land you own or have power, turn on the no push. It doesn't stop all of it, just the cheap stuff.

Reminds me of a mild griefing incident that happened to me when I was installing a door on my newly built store. I was in the process of resizing the door to fit the opening and I could see on my mystitool and minimap that someone was walking around nearby. Eventually, while I was aligning the door, the person clicked on it and it opened, so I clicked on it again to close it and went back to aligning the door. The other clicked again, and again, and again with the door rapidly opening/closing/opening over and over. I finally asked if I could help him. No response, but he also left. Then he went around outside the building and continued opening and shutting the door. So, I chatted "Lock" and the door shut and stopped responding to him. He eventually said something that resembled F.U. and left. hrug:

Did you get the brand name? The more nicotine the bigger the grief. If they're king sized, forget it then.

If it's on your land you have the power to freeze, eject and ban them. No sheild can defeat this. Just right click them then pick MORE from the pie menu then click EJECTt, problem solved. Unfortunately freeze is too short only 20-30 seconds, barely enough time to find ban and eject powers, not enough time for people to file an AR. Which is why I have proposed a JIRA modification to extend this time longer so you can decide if they warrant banning or not. http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-3914Please go to it, login and Vote for it to be improved.

Mmmmmm..... this thread makes me want another cig. I've had folks in my shop "try" to start something, but I keep build/script/push turned off. Kinda funny to watch 'em go thru the motions & the speech only to have it not work!

From: Alicia Sautereau that wasn`t a griefer but just an idiot This thread is interesting to me because I've read a lot about griefers but still dont really know who or what they are. I was in a shop the other night with an unknown female av, and suddenly she was whisked into the air in a spinning ball. As I was watching thinking"Wow, spinning ball" I too was whisked into the air in a similar ball. I logged out when I realised I couldnt do anything and reappeared safely back at my last place of log out. Was this a griefer? Was I 'griefed'? Was there actually somebody in the world who waitied around that shop just to do that to customers? AND when you get griefed is it just a simple case of logging out or can griefing be more long term and serious?

If you look in the client menu options - think it's under Help - for "Pushes, Bumps and Hits", you can find out if you were attacked. It will say something like: <name> attcked you with a script. It keeps a record for the login session - so you can AR from that information.

From: Folsom Carter i met my first griefer face to face Wow! lucky you, I've never met a greifer before. From: SuezanneC Baskerville don't suppose it was that cigarette-face, was it? eugh... That picture makes me feel ill. From: AlexLee Saunders Was this a griefer? Was I 'griefed'? Was there actually somebody in the world who waitied around that shop just to do that to customers? AND when you get griefed is it just a simple case of logging out or can griefing be more long term and serious? Yes this sounds like a griefer - especially if you couldn't do anything about it. Yes, you would be surprised at what people get kicks out of. Some like building or creating, some like helping, others like to be arses and love to annoy the crap out of whoever they can whenever they can. Normally logging out should do it, though it may be a good idea to login to another area, just to be safe. I think there are things that can corrupt items but I am not sure on that. Motly they are just annoying things that you can either TP away from or Relog. Unless you are on your own land, in which case you can get tons of satisfaction i bet, from using freeze/eject/ban.

I also escaped the dreaded 'griefer' untill recently. I was building on a sandbox...and two feckin' eejits started to pelt me with arrows, one tried to get me into a kissing animation....the other had is 'appendage' hanging out...I got bumped, pushed, pelted. The two of them ganged up on me and I have to admit that I was actually scared. Needless to say I AR'd them both...but have no idea what the consequences of the AR were.
I just happened to have had my mystitool hud attached...and I actually pushed one of them back..... which is not like me at all.
It was a rather frightening experience for me though.....

I have been in a shop with a hurricane animation that whisks you into the air, which is part of the shop display, maybe the shop keeper had one?

My 10 cents worth is that the trouble being new is you don't quite know if it's intentional attack from weirdo, your pc, or an sl glitch. Early days I got hit by a screenfull of SuperMarios bouncing around which I couldn't get rid of for what felt like ages - they'd fade then come back in intensity. I didn't know whether to laugh, cry, get over my newbie reservations and query the experience with others around me, or tough it out. Tough it out won the day.

Yes he was a griefer, no you weren't orbited; just pushed.
Pushes usually show up in one of the windows you can get to from the Help menu (bumps and pushes?), which can help you if you're griefed in a crowded area. Whenever this happens to me I distance myself from the individual (eject/ban if it's on my land) and file an Abuse Report (also in the Help menu) immediately. If the jackass griefs enough people in a short amount of time, and all those people report him, he WILL be disciplined.

From: Pocket Pfeffer I just happened to have had my mystitool hud attached...and I actually pushed one of them back..... which is not like me at all. I advise against this. Many griefers will abuse report you for taking retaliatory actions. Plus they often belong to groups whose members will gleefully file corroborating ARs against you and get you banned within minutes. Just port away and AR.

As I was watching thinking"Wow, spinning ball" I too was whisked into the air in a similar ball. I logged out when I realised I couldnt do anything and reappeared safely back at my last place of log out. Yeah, that was prolly a cage, not a hurricane. Caging is a mild form of griefing - there are "guns" that shoot cages. With most cages, if you get your camera outside the cage and click on something sittable, you will be out of the cage immediately. Incidently, if you are already sitting on something, you cannot be caged. I usually take the time to click on the cage, find the owner, take a picture of me in the cage, and use them in the AR report before leaving it. Then I put on a 96m AV detector and try and find the idiot. If I'm in a place where there are noobs, I shout that everyone should sit on something and also identify the griefer. "Wow, spinning ball" hehehe! You know, the Linden default anims make my avie look like she is saying "Wow, lookit that" all the time.
