I was fiddling with Google earth and thinking about building a life size model of the block I live on.

To my dismay it would take an entire sim to model the block I live on.

Anyone know of any builds that reproduce a user's real world location?

That would be a pointless and uninspired use of Second Life - that doesn't mean it hasn't been done, however.

Hasn't someone built a replica of a small section of Greenwich Village? I've been to it in world but not in real life, so I wouldn't know how accurate it is.

I think it may have been a whole sim.

Isn't Dresden Gallery a copy of the RL one? I'm sure there are a few others also.

I doubt the builder of the Titanic was living on the Titanic at the time of building.

I'm asking for examples of builds where a person built the place where they live.

Preferably life size, but one could probably shrink an avatar down and approximate the fit with a half size build.

I guess I started thinking about this from reading the thread about "How is SL going to be 3D internet".

If I were to do such a thing and try to make it an accurate model, I'd have to shape the terrain accurately, which I don't know how to do, and I've have to capture the textures of the buildings, and reproduce the trees with some accuracy, so that when I took a walk through it in SL it would look right to my eye.

I can picture the results of walking around with your digital camera taking lots of pictures of apartment buildings and businesses. It might look a bit odd.

I live and work and buy groceries and bank and buy gas on the same block, so I'd need to buiild the interiors of the businesses I frequent and my workplace.

Doing such a project might get me off the computer and outdoors, which would probably be a good thing.

Sims are small. Thinking about them as 256 x 256 meters doesn't mean much to me. They seem big when I'm in SL. Measuring them on Google Earth gave me a much better idea of how small they are.

The 'Dublin' sim is a perfect example of what you're talking about... It's extremely well built and very very very similar to the RL one...where I happen to reside :D I've walked along the same places in both lives, and the similarities are amazing....well...except for one fact..the SL Dublin is much cleaner and you don't get hit on by randy bus-drivers... :D

Most of Dublin's historical places are there...Christ Church Cathedral, Trinity College, the GPO (general post office where the 1916 rising took place).. the ha'penny bridge..etc.. A really good example of 'reality' coming in to SL...

EDIT: I think it's a great idea....hope you can get it done... I've often thought about doing it myself....

The Dresden Gallery is the ultimate RL replica that I've come across. While the fantsay world of SL is its main attraction, I think there's a place for some of these RL replicas, which do actually give a flavour of the real thing. Even the doubters should visiit Dresden Gallery to just be amazed.

I've seen several Stonehenge replicas, some better than others. There's one just across the road from my home and another a little further up thr road!!!

I have a replica of Turvey Church in Bedfordshire, England in the middle of the village on my island, Tin Teddy.

This is the church where many generations of my family were baptised, married and buried for at least 500 years. It is a beautiful building, and I wanted very much to recreate it here in Second Life.

The interior is not quite finished, but when it is, I hope that people would feel free to use it for SL weddings etc.

I'd imagine long term it will become a very common use of Second Life technology, especially with regards to building and planning.

There's a replica of parts of Portland, Oregon, built by people from Portland in the Haetae sim. It's fairly accurate I think, parts of it are textured from photos of the actual buildings.

Check out Red Square; complete with an entombed Lenin. It's fits on one sim.

Fairly recent build methinks...quite beautiful!

Polish cities: Second Krakow, Second Poznan and Second Wroclaw are quite nice replicas of these RL city centers.

Look at my signature.

While Bourbon St. and Pirates Alley don't actually meet in RL it is fun to put them together. All I need is a Red Fish Grill, Rick's Caberet and Kit Kat Club.

Conductor, is the place you log in to SL from in the build you mention?

==================

Are foiks using Google Earth, Maps, or similar software to get the layout of the land, and converting topographical data into height maps for raw files?

==================

Anyone know of builds of parts of San Francisco?

It's been around since at least the middle of last year, though there are a lot of unfinished bits. It actually stretches over a couple sims, though ya, the square is in one.

True, but my name is easily searched in SL.

My office where I work is four blocks away from Bourbon St. When I use SL for work purposes that is where I log in. Does that qualify?

Rutgers University has 4 sims in SL, and I have replicated their football stadium in a slightly simplified form as their Sandbox sim (RUCE 3).

I am in the progress of building RUCE 2, which will be an accurate and detailed re-creation of their "Old Queens" campus, which was founded in 1776. Their Continuing Education department will use it for offices in SL, and as an information and orientation center about their real university. So far, I have their three-story brownstone "Old Queens" schoolhouse completed, and I am most of the way through building Kirkpatrick Chapel. There will be three other major buildings for that site, plus the landscaping yet to be completed. RUCE 2 is closed to general access while I build it, but you can TP to RUCE 3, and can look from there to see the progress on RUCE 2.

Replicating an existing location certainly is not pointless. It can be a great educational tool. For example Vassar University has replicated the interior of the Sistine Chapel within SL. It's magnificent!
