Hello everybody!,
I was talking to my imaginary friend last night and we got to chatting about the mainland and how fugly it can be. My friend suggested that objects should be given a ratings tag so that people could rate the objects on their pleasantness. This then could lead to a muting system where objects with a negative rating could be made invisible and even phantom to everybody but their owner.
My friend said that a major benefit of this would mean that we all could help to make the mainland a far more pleasant place. and unlike other proposed muting methods this method would work globally. So when the nice new people come to check out Second Life, their sensitive little eyeballs wont be exposed to the horrors that the mainland is known to hold.
My imaginary friend also thinks that it would be important for the owner of the unpopular object to be able to reset the ratings on their objects at any given time. This would help to prevent them from being a victim of griefers that have neg rated their newly created build just for the fun of it. (My little friend is soo cynical!)
This system wouldn't really address the issue of ad farmers or those that are deliberately obnoxious. Its real purpose is to hide the abandoned and crap builds that even the owner doesn't care about.
Another possible benefit of such a system means that Darth Vader can happily work on his megaprim deathstar in the sandbox while Han Solo and the gang can continue to work on the millennium falcon.
So do you like my imaginary friend's idea?.
(I personally think he's nuts.)

While it sounds like a fantastic idea on paper, we've been down this road before: /120/53/35594/1.html/120/b7/45739/1.html

Okay, I told him!. My little friend said that this is the reason why the ratings would need to be ressettable by their owner. Ratings systems can easily be abused.

did not see the other threads so this has probably been mentioned
but a rating system like that would be open season for ppl to negatively rate their competitions items thus making them un-viewable
and having it resettable by the owner, kind of defeats the purpose of a rating system LOL
I miss the old rating system we had on each other, it was fun to get one and fun to rate others

While I'm thinking 'Danger, Will Robinson' when it comes to re-instituting a ratings system, your friends idea: From: 2k Suisei's friend This then could lead to a muting system where objects ... could be made invisible and even phantom to everybody but their owner. That in itself, could be fantastic. Don't even involve ratings: Allow folks to mute objects by object owner, and 'object mute' objects owned by parcel-banned avatars (much like parcel bans mute chat from banned avatars entering parcels today). This would not only help solve the abandoned/crap build problem you're talking about, but potentially mitigate some of the adfarm problem as well.

The personal muting is too umm... personal. It doesn't make the mainland a better place to explore for everybody.
With a rating system a user could adjust a tolerance slider in their mute settings and make it so that only the worst builds are hidden or only the best builds are visible.
He's crazy!!. Don't listen to him!
