Could my inventory be any messier?

I don't know if this is true or not, but I seem to recall reading somewhere recently that if you organize your folders IN the system folders that SL provides, your inventory is less likely to get eaten by the hungry asset server, than if you had things in a bunch of your own folders at the root level. So, you would use the "clothing" folder SL provides, and you make all your hierarchy folders within that folder for all things relating to clothes. Sounds like it makes sense. And it would make the root level of your inventory much tidier.
Anyone else remember this? Is it true? I've started doing it, since like most of you, my inventory is presently out of control.
Thanks.

Thanks. Actually, that's what I do. All my clothes related folders are kept in the system folder; eyes, hair, shapes, skins are in 'Body parts', etc. If it's true that there is less of a chance that they will be eaten, great! I like the fact that when I open up my Inventory, I can initially see all my choices in the window without scrolling. I really hope you're right about that, it does make sense.

From: Colette Meiji Go into ever folder category Make a folder called "To be sorted" and stuff everything in it. The just pretend like it doesn't exist until its time to make "to be sorted 2" I did that and the day I started to create the #3 was when I finally decided that I had to get serious about cleaning and sorting inventory. I actually started out very very organized, but it got out of hand as I just really love shopping too much and would then rather socialize than sort what I bought. My biggest problem is not really getting the boxes unpacked, but actually trying things on to decide if I really like it and then filing that outfit folder in the proper category folder. Some people organize by type of clothing and others organize by the designer. That part is going to be totally dependent upon how you think about your clothes. I would never be able to find anything if I simply did it by designer, but that is because I think in terms of the style/type of the outfit. Also, for me, it is very important to keep almost everything in outfit folders because I do not mix and match well. My clothing sub-folders are 5 o 6 levels deep - I need it to be at that level in order to find things - whereas my shoes are probably only 3 levels deep.

well one thing you can do is the "to be sorted idea"
then every time you use something in those folders, Sort that item.
Eventually after a month or two you'll have all the stuff you've used recently sorted, and a scary "I haven't needed it for months" folder.

I have never used the system folders - I don't like their sort order - and, to the best of my knowledge, I have never lost an inventory item.

My inventory of over 12,000 items is immaculately sorted.
I just can't find anything.

I pretty much use sub-folders, and most are under system folders. Clothing and Body parts are easy ones to do. I sort my clothes by type only...dresses/skirts, Tops/Pants, Jeans, Shoes, boots, jewelry, Accessories, gowns, etc. Body parts are skin/hair/eyes/shapes/miscellaneous. Hair is sorted first by color, then by style (i.e. long, medium length, short, updos/tails, etc.).
I use storage prims in my inventory, and I usually keep all of my outfits in boxes and take them out and now and then to make sure everything is still in the database and all attachments rez properly. When I go on a shopping spree, everything goes into my "new stuff" folder and then when I get back home, I try everything on and immediately sort it into the proper folder. I have a folder just for demo's, too, for when I buy a bunch of hair or skin demos and don't have time to try them in the store.
I keep my inventory under 5000, although that limit started at 3000.....lol. I use a texture organizer for my textures, or they would be entirely out of control.
The worst part is starting it. You pretty much have to pick a time to log on and keep entirely to yourself while you sort. Once you get it all done, it only really takes weekly maintenance to keep it all neat and tidy. I usually spend some time every saturday afternoon getting my inventory in order. Deleting uneeded things, sorting through landmarks and notecards and deleting what I don't need, etc. I usually only need to spend about 15 minutes every Saturday since all the sub folders are pretty much created at this point.

I'm not as diligent about it as I should be, but here's my system:
I have about a dozen folders of basic categories, dresses, pants, shoes, etc. then I subfolder those into formal, casual, goth, etc.
So, to copy Gabriele, it's like: Hair-> Short, Long, Bobs, Ponytails & Ponybuns Dresses->Short->short formal, short casual, short club
I also have a couple of favorite stores with their own folders, since their stuff all tends to coordinate. If it's close to a holiday, or I'm doing a hunt, I make a folder devoted to that, since I'll be getting too much to sort as I go.
Right now, I'm really trying to get under 10,000 items and stay there. I'm at 13,000+ now, so it's a pain, but worth it-I think.

here comes the help
03-11-2008 13:56
Hi, just got a link to this forum since some know already about my invention for inworld content management, or simply, inventory organization. so here is my help offer: come to our place, try the demo free and if you like it its still on introduction sale. no need to organize. simply put your stuff in a box or the prepared categorized storage i made, then touch a box to get a list of whats inside, and if you say what you want it to give to you it will do exactly that. i even made a script to delete box content without ever opening the box (which, lets admit it, takes up most of our precious time -waiting for stuff to load!) i hope the url works, if not look inworld for my profile and get to our place/store. its through the main entrance and to the left on the wall. or IM me i send you a landmark. also IM me with questions if you should have any. not sure if i introduced myself on this forum yet. just read it occasionally i must admit. so here i am, business owner in second life, inventor of some fun stuff and free tutorials for sl design. HI oh nearly forgot the link: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Long%20Beach/37/86/23/see you there
