What do we know about Destination Guide and Showcase?

From: Scylla Rhiadra Interesting, though, that it remains "Mature," and not "Adult." That does seem to suggest that maybe there IS more to the place than just Vivid Video versions of lesbian porn, as presumably you can't have actual animated sex here. Maybe there is an actual community of some sort here?
The Mature designation does not mean there is redeeming social value. It means merely that the place does not contain one of the factors that would require it to be Adult. The nude picture on the dancefloor (I guess it's the same one I saw when I went to this place maybe a year or so ago- taken from a snapshot of a group of avatars) doesn't have photorealistic nudity. It's photorealism that kicks in the requirment of Adult designation. Surely it may have changed since I was there, but I'm sure you saw pretty much what there is to see and do. (I don't mean to be too down on the place. I dislike the gender exclusion rules, it sounds like they are impolite when enforcing them, and because of those two things its placement in Showcase is questionable. If one has no problem with the gender-exclusion policy, it's probably a fine place.)

Yeah, I don't know how they decided I'm a guy--it's not like either my name nor my avatar is very macho--but I'm pretty up-front about it in my profile, so maybe that's how they did it. Sorry about the guess it was done by a bot: that was based on a probably incorrect assumption about how the viewer knows what shape of avatar to draw. I knew it wasn't a script, and it was *fast*: by the time the black teleport screen was gone, I already had three lines of green text greetings from a scripted object by the name of "Paris", a group invitation dialog box, a landmark inventory offer, and a partially expired 15 second warning to get my putative penis off the parcel or else. Before I got to that warning, I was ejected to the corner of the sim surrounded by void and another sim with only whitelist access. By the time I figured out I was trapped, teleport home wouldn't work, so I just bounced around there until I could clear my IMs, AR Courtney Linden, and relog. All of which is really fine with me: if they want an exclusive place for recreational virtual lesbianism, that's cool--I'd have no problem with a gay all-male place, either. I'm fine with it in-world, I'm fine with it listed in Search, I just don't think either of those belong in a Destinations Guide, if they're actually going to eject the unfavored gender. But... ... I'm still not clear who among the Lindens to contact to find out about the plans for this Destination Guide thing, whether there's any programmatic way to search it, and whether it will / does include Adult content. I had a question all ready for Blondin's Zindra meeting but that turned out to be... not the ideal setting this time. In the course of all this, though, another question comes to mind: do we have any idea how the *order* of the Destinations is determined? Lesbian Paradise is still showing as the first entry under Hot Spots, so it's not as if they're presented in a random rotation or anything.

From: Scylla Rhiadra I'm sort of intrigued by this now, and I'm going to ask around a bit more. It could just be that no one got around to pressing the Adult reclassification.

Interesting -- I've been asking around about "real" lesbian hangouts, as opposed to those catering to pornified "lesbians" (which was certainly my impression of Lesbian Paradise). A few I've learned about and/or checked out have polite requests about males, either respecting the nature of the place, or not entering, but none of them ejects (so far as I could tell). But these are also, with the exception of one D/s place, not "sex" sims in any sense: they are literally just bars and hangouts, so maybe they don't need to be aggressive in excluding males. It's a shame that LL apparently didn't do more careful research, and showcase a spot that reflects RL lesbian values and communities, rather than a place that looks like an annex to Bob Guccione's mansion.

You assume that a Linden has ever actually tried to visit every place listed in the Showcase. Linden Lab says that the Showcase is "editorially-controlled." We do not know whether this editorial process includes actually visiting a place before listing it in a showcase, or even if the editorial process is conducted by a person rather than an automated process.

From: Qie Niangao *sigh* I was curious what the maturity rating was for that parcel, so I tried to visit. Guess what? Arrived--immediately banned, presumably for the offense of being a male avatar. I'm still getting banned over and over, bouncing to the corner of the sim and down to about -700m. Great way to introduce new residents to what SL has to offer. Goddammit. (The parcel is Mature, by the way, so included in the list of virulently avatar-hostile destinations are Mature rated parcels.) [ETA: I just AR'd Courtney Linden for this one. Whichever Mechanical Turk vetted this destination needs a spot of re-education.] What on earth is this place doing in the destination guide anyway? It's a club and mall, whoopee do, unless they're trying to say it's worthy due to being women only, in which case I have to say it's a rather sad state of affairs if this is the place being used to promote female friendly locations in Second Life.
