LOL http://foo.secondlifeherald.com/slh/2009/11/pink-lindens-commerce-survey-scares-merchants.html I'll say the same thing I said over at SLU : I'm willing to pay higher fees if LL will police merchants and fix the system holes that allow some merchants to game the system. But I'm not willing to pay higher fees so that I have to continue to compete against merchants gaming the traffic system, able to keyword spam, lump rentals in with item sales, and post adult listings in mature and PG search. If regular merchants have to compete with douchbag merchants, LL better be prepared for an exodus of stores (and the resulting loss of tier) and a flight to other web based merchants. They need to start enforcing the rules if they want merchants to pay up. _____________________

There is nothing I can do to change it, so I don't see any point in stressing out about it. I will just wait and see.

The majority of my sales come from XStreet...usually a few a day. Granted my prices are very low (not to undercut; they're the same prices I set a year or so ago based on what I felt was the quality and/or time in the item.)

I used to have a number of things for sale on XStreet-SL. Back before LL bought it, the sales were not phenomenal, but at least I got some sales. As my sales dropped off to nearly zero, I removed many of the items I had for sale there, in many cases ceasing selling those items entirely.
With the current anti-competitive rules for XStreet-SL Listings and Blog posts, which prohibit any links to any E-Commerce site that LL hasn't already bought out, I have removed all my merchandise from XStreet-SL. I can't even provide helpful links back to my own website, because I dare to mention that the textures I make are sold at a site that LL doesn't own. The only thing I have left on XStreet-SL are the free megaprim sets that I made and that Carl Metropolitan asked me to make available on his behalf. I moved a few of my merchandise items to a new on-line store, but have yet to get ant sales there. They are small still, and haven't got much traffic. If anyone knows any e-commerce sites other than XStreet-SL that actually generate real sales volume, please send me an IM here, or drop me a notecard in-world. (Don't risk having LL ban you for daring to break their anticompetitive rules...) As far as shopping, I rarely shop on XStreet any more. Too much identical crap. Too many instances of 3 pages of the same outfit in different colors. Too many completely unrelated items listed when you search for something. SLX used to work well. Since LL bought it... well... *shrugs* I sell textures at what is most likely the biggest in-world texture store in SL, and on their non-LL-owned e-commerce site. I sell my sim building services mostly by word of mouth, and via my own website. I've stopped bothering to make or sell clothes, furniture, accessories, or avatar attachments like wings. Just not worth the effort. _____________________
Sorry, LL won't let me tell you where I sell my textures and where I offer my services as a sim builder. Ask me in-world.

I'm glad (in a perverse way) to hear I'm not the only one whose sales have dropped through the floor..
Six months ago I was doing reasonably well off Xstreet on both Pearl and my alt's items. Sales were pretty constant week after week, and had been that way for around 18 months, but since LL bought the site my sales just went down and down and are now around 1/4 of what they were just a short time ago. To be honest I can't be bothered listing new items any more. It doesn't seem worth the hassle for the poor return on sales. Also: has anyone noticed how painfully slow the site is now? I was searching for items the other night and gave up in disgust after a couple of minutes. That can't help matters either... |

I shop on SLX but I only spend money there I earned on SLX, and usually for stuff I already know about from in-world.

I must confess to shopping at XStreetSL.
It is an invaluable resource (if not a slightly challenging one) for finding particular items. My preferred method is to find the item on the web site, and then see if there's an inworld store, where I'll make the actual purchase. Rarely do I have to make a purchase on the site itself. It's worth noting that the listing does, in my case, lead to a sale. But you can't know it because I do the actual purchase inworld. Heh. The client search tools suck, and you end up having to TP to see what you've found. The time it takes for a store to rez is too great for me. Unless I'm there for a particular item, if the load is slow, I'm out of there without having seen the goods. This also leads to nice discoveries. I might start with a particular item of interest, but upon landing in a store see other things I like. I can also "window shop" when not in-world. I'll often find a few items of interest, and then visit the stores the next time I get in-world. _____________________

I do a lot of what Love described: window shopping, then off to buy inworld. I second everything she said.
I also buy stuff for my alt through XStreetSL, since gift-giving is easy there (and usually not possible inworld). And yeah - searching! It's a challenge, a lot like that arcade game with the claw... ![]() Or maybe Forrest Gump would compare XStreetSL's search to a box of chocolates? |

Here's a link to a couple tips I posted in another thread for searching on SLX
![]() /327/5c/326398/2.html#post2466905 I use SLX a lot like Love, with similar results. I window shop, tp in world, and often find things I like unrelated to the search. I'm such a consumer ^_^ _____________________

You shop exactly like me! once stores realize Im there to buy, not to go ohh and ahh at countless extra prims, maybe their saless will increase Save the ohh and ahh stuff for a rp or theme sim. I really dont want to rezz a million cute penquins or otters when all I want is a sweater or such. (example only, I make my own clothes) |

I don't shop there anymore, in part because it's not worth the effort to look through all the crap and in part because I'm not very active in SL anymore.
My sales? Not worth the effort of creating listings. I'm not listing anything new and I have nothing in development. When I get tired of paying 130% of my earnings back to LL I'll probably close up shop, on SLX and in-world. Probably soon-ish. _____________________

I still shop there. I still find it a faster way to find, share(paste url), or gift stuff from Xst. But this is only for specific things, that i know the name of.
Window shop i don't. far too much spam and duplicate items muddling up that fun. Sales. Steady i suppose. Though never as good as in world sales. I don't sell my whole line there, just some boats and the odd special. I do, however, entice people to my in world store with a "free test drive" link. Which surely directs some of my xst sales inworld. I don't personally track such things, but ive seen the results of tracking teeps from xst. For my traffic tracking friend, almost half their traffic was coming thru xst. Now there's is an animation store. The "gotta try animations first" reaction to animations-- much like my boats-- is probably skewing things some. |

I shop there. Lately, I found 2 merchants who offer a free demo of their products. A bathroom and a cuddle raft. I bought the demo first, rez'ed in my place and then bought the product. (No, I don't have the raft in my tub, haha)
I totally love merchants who make an effort like this. No more "too big" or "Don't fit in" purchases. It's merchants like that who make it worth going through a ton of junk in Xstreet. Going to write a positive review on the demo even if I didn't buy the product, just for the customer-friendly approach. |
