I mean really...why does one need an ALT?

Because of a lack of privacy in SL. It's not much fun being on call to 40000 people 24/7. Sometimes it's nice to get away without being disturbed.

How long can you stay on OI? My roommate and I both joined SL at the same time, and were on different OI's upon our first login....but still talking to eachother cause we were sitting in the same room. She had someone approach her right from the start, who had a non-newb AV, spoke with her for a bit and then told her he would be back with a different name and send her a message. He then logged off, and another AV sent her a teleport. He showed her all around and introduced her to a lot of SL, gave her clothes and then proceeded to stalk her. He told her that he keeps an alt on OI and whenever he needs a new friend, he logs onto that alt, finds someone and then goes onto his primary account and tp's them out. This was not a public OI, but the first login OI. Is that possible? I was told by someone else that If you log out during your initial visit to OI that when you come back you will be in a public OI.

I've noticed this too!.

I met this guy on orientation island that was claiming to be a mentor but I just got the impresssion that he was just interested in chatting me up and touching my privates. :(

He started off asking me if I had any problems then kept trying to steer the conversation away from my problem to asking me where I was from etc. He was very spooky and annoying.

wow - what a creep! To answer your question, I logged out during my initial visit to OI and logged back in to the same place. I was on the new OI, with the castle, volcano and driving area.

When I left OI, it took me straight to Help Island, which consisted of some displays, how to billboards, a small sandbox with cryptic building instructions (step one rez a box, step two use it to build stuff, step three clean up after yourself) and a small freebie shop with some very basic stuff in it. I left OI and ended up in Ahern - which is just a zoo. I figured everything else out from there pretty much on my own. I'll add that I am extremely talented at making plywood boxes and cleaning up after myself.

Anyone interested? Should I put in a JIRA request for this?

I'd like to help, but I don't have any real skills. I can't build or script well enough to make anything really beautiful.

I don't think ALTS are encouraged for the average citizen. I know Lindens have ALTS, which is acceptable and advised...but in general, I think creating an ALT is kind of gaming the system.

I mean really...why does one need an ALT?

Michael, you really do say the most extraordinarily odd things sometimes.

LL has absolutely no problem with residents having alts. Until a few months ago, the sign up procedure allowed you to pay a one-time fee of $10 (USD) for additional accounts. They stopped doing that at some point, leaving the exact policy unclear, but they haven't said anything to indicate it is no longer allowed. When questioned directly, some Lindens have stated there is a limit of one FREE account, while others have said there is a limit of 5 accounts per household. Either way, LL has no reason to object to someone having multiple PAID accounts. And if I remember correctly, the official SL book even suggests the use of an alt.

So WHY do people have alts? So many reasons, from testing purposes to character development, and all perfectly legitimate. They are very common, and most people I've talked to about it have at least one. And for mainland landlords who need their land deeded to a group for the renters, an alt is absolutely necessary... otherwise you risk having your group closed and land repossessed by LL if you don't have any renters.

I'd like to add, look up 'Alt Account FAQ' in the Knowledge Base. Couple excerpts:

From: someone

Alternate accounts... multiple identities... We all have them in some way or another. Perhaps in real life you're an entrepreneur in the morning, soccer mom in the afternoon, and vegetarian chef in the evening. In Second Life, you get to externalize these roles in customized, uniquely identifiable personas -- otherwise known as alt accounts. How cool is that?

There are great reasons for having more than one account in Second Life, and we like to facilitate these uses.

From: someone
Currently, you can create as many additional Basic or Premium accounts as you want to pay for, with the following limitations:

* You can create up to five accounts per email address.
* You can create no more than two accounts in a single 24-hour period.

Previously, we limited accounts to five per household and two per payment method, but this is no longer the case.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

I dunno if its a common OI theme with the Lindens or what, but the parrot is still on the new OI. From the center go towards the volcano lesson, left road near the water, just past the first station look down and left.. he's on that perch of his on a tiny lil island in the water. He even still asks for a kiss hehe.

To be able to step into another skin of course, Michael! I have a male alt who I love to take out and about. The differences in the way people communicate with and relate to me are fascinating, and enable me to gain some small insight into what being a member of the opposite sex might be like.

I have heard it said - or rather, read, in another forum - that it's too difficult to sustain the gender switch, but I don't find it so. It's taken considerable persistence, but I find now that I step into a different mind-set when I step into my male avatar. The same goes for my little neko, my lizard alien, my... well, it goes on.

As a writer, it's also immensely useful to me for character development. In all, I find it a highly creative exercise, and wouldn't be without alts for the SL world!

So say someone set up a group to revamp the current OI or the old "may return to" OI, and wanted to volunteer the group's services to LL... how would one go about doing that?

LL will be more than happy to send newbies your way... for $295/month/sim of course :).
