I think it's pretty clear that search all is worthless. And the only reason why people even use it is because they are clueless and lazy. All it is is an enhanced search of places that now includes objects. It has the feature we want - boolean operators - but it is limited in that it only returns 5 pages - and they won't fix it for months (!!)
It's not worthless if people use it, and it's lot more than "an enhanced search of places that now includes objects". The results and rankings are determined by a quality search engine, which is several orders of magnitude better than the power behind the other search tabs.

Incidentally, it sometimes returns only 50 results and at other times it returns more. There is more than one system behind it, but I don't yet know whether there is more than one index plus engine, which would mean that there is more than one datacenter, or if it's just more than one index. I suspect that one of the systems is set to return only 50 results, and the other is set to return more - probably accidental.

The 5 pages thing is a bug in the Google appliance software, it shouldn't happen at all. LL says that Google is working on it.
