The Weirdest Thing I've Ever Seen in SL

I logged in for the first time in days and walked from my land into the next sim, where I crashed. So I logged in again and started to walk from my land into the next sim again, but when I got part way there, I was suddenly in the next sim. I repeated that 4 times and it happened every time - part way there (a long way from the next sim) and suddenly I'm in the next sim.

Each time I arrived in the next sim I couldn't move or TP anywhere. I could turn and appear to TP but I was always in the same spot in the next sim.

I have 2 computers so I brought my alt down on the other computer to see what she could see. I logged out and in again and walked in the same direction. I had her waiting near the 'jump' spot but she couldn't see me at all, even though I was yards from her. So I took her into the next sim where I kept ending up and she saw me there, but I hadn't arrived there yet. I saw me where I should be and, simultaneously, she saw me in the next sim. She walked up to me in the next sim and I disappeared right in front her eyes. She walked to where I could see me standing, and now she could see me there. I walked a few yards further along my route and suddenly I was in the next sim again - as usual.

For a while I was logging out walking towards the sim and when I got part way there, I was suddenly there. On my screen I could try to walk but stayed in the same spot, but on her screen she saw me walk and move. My guess is that when I was TPing but ending up in the same spot, she would have seen me arrive at the places I tried to TP to.

I got out of it by seeing myself in the next sim on my screen, while she saw me along the route to that sim on her screen. I walked into the next sim, using my keyboard (my screen showed me in the next sim and walking on the spot) and using her screen to see which way I was actually going. When I arrived in the next sim using that method, I was suddenly ok again. I could move etc. Problem dealt with.

It's the weirdest thing I've ever seen in SL.

I assume that the spot I kept suddenly arriving at is the exact spot where I originally crashed, and that that sim hadn't let go of me, so when I got within range of being a child agent, that sim took me, even though my alt saw things differently. Something like that, anyway.

Your reasoning seems unassailable to me. I haven't seen anything quite that weird, but I've seen some pretty weird things happen when a sim hasn't realized you've crashed yet.

Is your alt named Schroedinger by any chance? This would explain much, and we should all be grateful you escaped with your life after venturing repeatedly into an indeterminate state.

If it ever happens again, quickly sign up an alt named Heisenberg and see if he's able to measure your velocity.

Oddly enough, the room was spinning here so I went to bed, Bradley. :)

lol. Good thinking, Anti. It's definitely put me off from becoming a furry in SL - especially a Neko :)

Sounds like a sim restart to me, or a Phil restart, one of the two :)

lol Clarissa. I'd never seen an episode of Torchwood until 2 days ago when I decided to watch the first series - and stop if I didn't take to it. I'm part way through the series now, or your post would have gone over my head.

Maybe I should stand near the 'jump' point and watch for any alien arrivals before calling them.

@Rock. I'd thought that a restart was going to be necessary, and I would have requested one if I hadn't had the other computer to do some testing/checking with.

think I must have drinking the same stuff as you, Phil.

went on sl last night, landed on my home spot on the porch of my house. my guy was on the beach, walked over to him, & shared a hug. as I was typing in IM, I tp'd back to my home spot on the porch, maybe 10m away. happened 3 times as we chatted, after each time I walked back to him. think the gremlins in the computer were working overtime.

I remembered something else about it. When I crashed while in the next sim, I couldn't log back in for a while because the system was logging me out. When that happens it's not normally necessary to wait until the time stated, but this time, I had to wait until the time stated, and only then could I get back in. So the system let me in even though the next sim still had me.

It's interesting. It means that, although I wasn't officially logged out according to the next sim, the time stated when I could log in again appears to be a timeout, so that, if the sim hasn't released you by the timeout time, the system ignores it and let's you in.

Should this happen to everybody who brings those
bots inside SL?

Edit: haha thats fun - your bots maybe do not want you to be around anymore. They need also privacy ?

Phil, I seriously loved this posting - (and thanks to DW for alerting me to it because I just always forget to read all the forums on a daily basis) - You are so lucky you got to see your own ghosting; first time I had a ghost I was unable to log into my main account for 3 days. The second time I crashed and left a ghost around, I was unable to log in account, so I brought in my (male!) alt and retraced my steps (TPs). I located main avatar standing as large as life on a beach, and I have to say it felt a bit weird to see my main av looking really very normal, complete with Animation Overrider, just with a greyed out face. My alt tried to dislodge main av me with various weapons but she was having none of it, and there she stayed until LL followed up a support ticket and reset the SIM.

I wish you'd posted where you'd ghosted - we could have all come to have a look.

If anyone has never seen a ghosted avatar before, theres been one at Fenrick 187,13,40 for weeks - a mate of mine told me he was there and that he seems quite happy enough (he can still log in and doesn't seem to be having any problems he says).

I love finding this kind of weird stuff like this.

P.S. - maybe someone wants to open a new thread (or maybe there is one somewhere) does EVERYBODY have an alt av of an alt sex to their main one?

What happened could be quite common as far as ghosts are concerned. As long as I didn't get near the next sim, I could have gone all over SL - everything was fine until I 'jumped' each time, and I only jumped when I moved nearer to that sim. There wouldn't have been anything worth seeing though - just me, able to turn but unable to move. My alt was unable to see both avs although I didn't do any real testing of that - she may have been too near the next sim when she couldn't see me where I saw me.

It's interesting that people report that they are kept out of SL until the ghost is dealt with, like you Marigold. I was only kept out until the stated time had elapsed, so maybe there's been a change, and the system now ignores it if a sim still has the av when the timeout is up.

I have a female alt because I make couple animations, and I also position them on furniture. I used to call in female friends for the positioning but it's easier to use a female alt.

Huh? ;)

If you mean threads about people's alts and/or having an avatar of the gender different than their RL gender, plenty of those threads exist. Just search back through the forums a bit.

I'm pretty sure there's been at least a dozen threads about that, or about something close enough to that to make the difference academic.

Weird stuff in SL
06-14-2009 09:49
Weirdest thing I've ever seen in SL has to be ....
hmmmmmm.....
diaper fetishists

but hey each to their own

and child avatars.... thats another strange one too

but again....

one person's weird is another person's absolutely normal

(And I now go and retreat behind a wall waiting for those cutting remarks that are always so prevalent when someone speaks "out of turn" in these Forums)

Camping bots are pretty weird when you come face to face with about 80 of them on a sky platform at places that sell skins and shapes and they are ugly with 2 faces.... so Ava, your post is more relevant than perhaps some people would believe.

On a personal level, as I campaigned against traffic bots last year via The Avastar, this is absolutely excellent news. There's not much in Second Life more frustrating than being unable to log in because (reading from an error message) "due to unusually high demand logins have been disabled..."

Marigold some child avs are really cool, they are good roleplayers. They approach SL as 'real kids' and add to the community the same way an 'older' av might.

The only 'creepy' ones for me are what's termed by some as the 'prostitots' - i.e. kid avatars with caked on makeup, wigs, bling...and heels! (But listed in profile as kids, shaped as kids and titler/AO/chat as kids so they are not just short avs.) But again, hey it's SL. They might be standing next to a dragon in pink lacy lingerie!

I wouldn't lump kid avs in with 'adult diaper' fetishists is what I'm trying to say. As long as they don't wear a talking diaper though, (which I've seen/heard in public), hey live and let live again. I can always choose not to read the profile further. :p
