Does anyone read long long posts??? Just curious, they say most people just scan quickly if it's more than a paragraph, I don't just mean here in the forums, but all stories.

I know I just scan quickly 95% of the time if it's more than one paragraph.

I sure hope people do, because a lot of the cr*p I write falls into that category.

I skim and if the first paragraph is boring, I move on.

Now if someone's describing a problem, I try to read the whole darned thing, no matter how poorly written, so I can try to answer them in a coherent manner.

If it's not written in anything remotely resembling any written language known to mankind, I tend to move on quickly so as to save my eyes the strain. ;)

What I hate...

are threads with titles that don't actually describe the subject of the thread. Leading, vvague, and often unrelated sentence fragments. Here's a few recent examples.

Whiteout!

Frankly... 90% of those threads don't even get a CLICK from me, much less a read. It's like the customer(?) who IMs me with "Hi u there?"... there's a fair chance that I may never respond (especially if it came through as an offline). Threads that essentially do the same thing, barely get a notice from me.

Guess I should have added "Do you read..." to that list.

I only clicked it, hoping the remainder was "...threads with taunting subjects?"

Usually when I see a post that’s more then 3 pages, I don’t bother because its probably already been hijacked and completely off the OPs topic.
Unless of course its a thread begging to be ignored.

If it's someone known for posting garbage, probably not. If I'm bored by the end of the first paragraph, or the OP's writing 'style' gives me a headache, then definitely not.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

I gave up after the subject line. Can somebody summarize this for me?

If you're offline at the time, they already have the answer to the question.

If it's someone asking (politely) for help, or if the subject interests me, then yes I'll read a long post.

If the person fails to consider the readers, and is too lazy to begin sentences with capitals, or use basic punctuation because it isn't his 'style', then I will skip the post since it isn't my 'style' to read those.

Ditto! I find this annoying, especially if I'm looking for a relative answer to the OP.

But in this case, I think the OP wants to know if you read the entire OP if it rattles and prattles and never seems to end. My answer to that would be...depends. Not if it's boring and doesn't apply to me.

If I am on the forums I have time to spare, so if the post is good I will read it.If it is dull I won't and if it's too hard for me to interpret e.g. too much trendy 'forumspeak' that I can't understand I move on,

I will read them if I have time, and if the subject matter holds great importance to me. If it's silly ranting or something, probably will just skim it or pass over it.

Depends on the subject, really. If it's in the building forum, and is about building, I'll likely read it. If it's a big long winded thing on some scripting issue, then it's probably over my head, so usually I won't attempt it.

If it's politics or something, I won't even read short posts. I come here for SL and fun, not politics, my personal choice. If it's a question that I think I can't help with, I'll read it once it's answered, otherwise I forget the question it's answering. If it's a long question I feel confident about, I'll read and answer.

And occasionally, I get a bit long winded meself ;)

I think if you are asking for suggestions on how to make sure your post is being read I would have to say,

1. keep it short

2. use paragraphs

3. use good spelling and grammar

4. breaking it up into numbered points is also good.

And yes I do try to read everything that a person writes especially if it's the first post of a thread. Skimming leads to a lot of misunderstanding and a lot of 'you didn't read my post correctly' type of arguments.

Depends on the thread.

If its a thread I've posted on, I look for my post then any replies after just to see who I've P*ssed off so I can further post to P*ss them off.
:D
