Hey, Y'all!
An almost-two-week-old noobie here with a question: exactly what happens to your av when you log off of SL? Do other SL'er still see it just standing there or does it disappear? I've seen a few avs standing still and slightly hunched over (pretty much how I look when I've been hanging out at a party for too long in RL). I think I've seen "Away" on their name tags but I'm not sure. Now I'm wondering what I'm doing when I'm not there...

Your av disappears when you log off. The slumped avatars are still logged in, their typists just haven't done anything with them for a while.

When I started I would go to a place that I particularly liked and sit down before I signed off, thinking that's where people would find me when I wasn't signed in. I even remember telling someone where to find me when I wasn't online

*giggles* Yeah, you just goes pewf. Well not immediately, my partner has logged off and I've seen him standing ghostly in the house until I decide to really make sure he's gone and try to bump into him. Yeah, you just go pewf.
Those slumped over avatars are people who are actually online but away from their keyboards and the avatar has timed out. And unless you have your timeout fixed, you'll be logged out of SL in about 30 minutes of being away.

Hi Wall, Welcome to SL!
As people are telling you, you just disappear. The same as when someone teleports to a different location, they just "pop out" Well, you pop out and pop back in when you log in the next time.

LOL! Thanks, y'all! I feel kind of foolish now cause I've been parking my av in a dressing room on NCI at nights when I log off. I was afraid that if I parked myself on a bench on the beach I would wake up to find myself covered with shaving cream or who knows what! I lived in a soccer house in college and you learned not to fall asleep or pass out someplace where you're an easy target.

That will happen to you in some places if you go AFK and people find out about it. It is quite the tradition among some residents.

I worried about the same thing when I was a new and would sit down over by the creek next to Help Island Publics sand box before I signed off. Just shows that you are conscience of others and not like those slackers who let there avis just stand around unattended

She left the party for an hour to go watch Lost in RL and someone - NOT ME - (ok, it was me) helped her with her ensemble... Welcome to SL, Wall! You already know that you just disappear when you go offline. I'll tell you, though, I always leave Trout in the same place, sitting in a chair at the Hanson Infohub. I have no idea why I do that - maybe it's some sort of OCD or something. Also, sometimes an avatar will still show up for a little while after they log off. If you walk into them, they'll disappear.

From: Trout Recreant Where's that picture of Oryx at the hangout? I have one. It's on my Flickr, which is unfortunately blocked from work. I have it set as my homepage here though, if someone wants to go look.

yep you go poof
you are not alone in your thinking we stay logged in, I too used to think my avi stayed when I logged out and would always make sure I was fully dressed in case someone came by
even got to the point I would log out in bed for a little while thinking she stayed there through the night LOL
(one game I used to play if you logged out on the bed, when you awoke your stamina would regen faster for a short time, as though you really rested) heh was fun, a 2d cute little game, not very popular but fun none the less... maybe my thoughts carried over from that game

I used to think that also. I asked a friend once and they laughed at me cause i made sure I was dressed in my jammies Then another friend told me to make sure I have clothes on cause one time he logged on and he ended up in another place well nekkid. So I still make sure I am dressed Sometimes I even put my bunny slippers on. Bec

Sometimes the server where your avatar is at will forget to derezz your avatar, and it will remain ghosted at your last location for considerable time after you logg off. Occasionally an avatar ghost will get stuck hanging about for days before the server is restarted and the avatar ghost finally disappears. This often happens at sim crossings and when sims crash.

I am still convinced my av parties all night when I am not logged on. I always have to put all the poseballs away, let the girls out of the dungeon, clean up the empty scotch bottle, etc.

Warning
04-10-2008 14:34
Yes your AV disappears when you log out. Usually your AV reappears exactly where you left it when you log back in. However, if the sim you were standing in when you logged off is out-of-service when you log back on, you will appear in a different place, often a welcome center filled with strangers.
Don't log off wearing something you wouldn't wear in public.

That's a good warning. That's happened to all of us. It seems like the system picks a random infohub and dumps you there, so always make sure you're decent when you log off for the night.

After the Big Crash last weekend, one of my friends IM'd me saying she was in an Infohub and it was raining naked people. Apparently many were caught in, erm, compromising positions...

The other piece of advise I have for you is not only to wear something when you go away, but also make sure that you are NOT wearing anything that might not be obvious when you log back in. It can be embarrassing when you wonder about SL with parts showing, at least until someone tells you politely that you could put someone's eye out...

When I was new I created a safe room where I used to go when I logged off. It was only when I got my alts that I understood that you vanish, and thank goodness ,Lol

For some reason that reminds me of what it looked like on the lawn when the fire alarm went off in the middle of the night in my college dorm ...
