What's the deal with streaming movies in SL, how come it doesn't work? I'm trying to stream a 30mb file from a server and it either freezes the whole parcel ad disconnects everyone or the movie doesn't play at all. Now I'm at a point where no movies are playing off the tv. The media is set to movie and nothing seems to work. My wife can watch the cartoons that came with the tv but my screen is on the logo the whole time. Hitting stop and play doesn't fix the problem.

How do we go about paying a movie from a server to second life. I'm at ends here with this SL media streaming crap.

Just off the top of my head, are you certain the media file is encoded in a format that Quicktime can understand?

Format was mp4. I had it working before with mp4 but I was reduced to .mov. Now I need to find a streaming software to stream from my box.

I give up with streaming movies in this piece of crap world. I'm guessing unless you have a really small file, you can't stream anything.

If it's the tv I'm thinking of, try picking it up and re rezzing it. That might kind of reset it.

As for using your own stream, it might not be allowable with that particular tv since it has its own scripts.

Try getting a 'blanker' tv (unscripted), or even using a textured prim with a video stream URL copied and pasted into the media tab.

Can you play the movie outside of SL streamed the same way?

You have to put the same texture in the media tab: just in case you didn't know that. Sometimes the it's the simple things that trip people up.

(I'd use something with a pattern on it, to make things easier to know if it's working. Even a black texture might be a different black texture, or something. Use something unique.)

PS, if you pick up and re rez that tv (if it's the ones with cartoons loaded, Grimes I think?) it should automatically use the texture you put in your media tab. No need to add it to the tv. If it's that one.

Are you actually streaming the movie (as in using something like quicktime streaming server and using an rtp:// or rtsp:// protocol stream), or did you just put the movie file on a server and connect to the file through http://?

If you don't really stream a movie file, SL (or the quicktime component) will actually simply download it and for large files and slower bandwidths, this can take a long time.

Sadly the current implementation of quicktime in sl can cause severe slowdowns in your sl client, and often it will time out, not showing the video at all. Sometimes it can even crash the complete SL client.

If you are serious about streaming (longer) media files in SL, you need to look into either using a quicktime streaming host, or setting up a quicktime streaming server yourself.

In the other cases, I suggest trying to make sure your bandwidth (both the server and client side) is high enough (try downloading the file through a browser to see download speeds) If possible, split up the file in smaller parts, (and optionally use a quicktime SMIL file to play as a playlist.)

and being very patient ;)
