Wow, thanks Chosen~!!

You totally validated my instincts and I copied your reply to a word doc.....I'm not going to say where I got it from......but I am going to show this turd. I picked up my computer and played nice (for my own protection, I changed my password just to be safer still) I'm thinking I will show him your text.......anonymous source of course.....and simply stress that he might want to keep better tabs on what his repair guys are up to.

My thoughts are this.....either HE *the owner* really doesn't knw much at all about computers and he is doing what his repair team has insisted he do......OR.....he knows quite a bit and has been playing dirty for the past 10 years with people. What struck me was how intent he was on getting my password when I saw him out Monday night. He practically bullied me, making it appear as though it was critical to them being able to make any repairs or diagnostics. This....leads me to believe he knows exactly what he's doing.

Wait'll I tell my uncle.....he's gonna flip. Ever since I came to town he's distanced himself from this guy because he was drooling over me and indicating to my uncle that he wanted to hire me, wel, basically because he figued he could get that much closer. My uncle was pretty much disgsuted.....but they still play golf LOL. My fiance, on the other hand...if I tell him....is liable to turn this guy into a pretzel and his business into rubble. LOL

In terms of design, just about all NVidia cards of a given model are identical; only a handful of manufacturers stray at all from the NVidia reference design. The differences are in component and build quality, cooler design, and warranty. Some manufacturers also do custom drivers to take advantage of the stray feature that they add to a card, but the standard drivers from nvidia.com also work. Some cards do need special utilities from the manufacturer for cooling control and temperature monitoring, because they use non-reference-design cooling systems. And some manufacturers sell cards that have been overclocked at the factory.

Laptop NVidia chips are evidently another story. Some laptop manufacturers have their GPUs modified in various ways that make them work only with drivers supplied by the manufacturer. Avoid such systems if at all possible; the manufacturer generally loses interest in updating the drivers as soon as they stop manufacturing your model of laptop.

EVGA is one of the better known graphic card manufacturers; you should do fine with that card.

...he was drooling over me

I think we can put these two parts together, and call this one solved. My advice, steer clear of this guy from now on.

I'm using EVGA 8600GT 512MB Dual DVI. It runs excellent for everything including SL.

My advice to you is to get the EVGA 8400GS 256MB. It is cheap, and will run SL very well. Use this until the real deal goes down in price: The nVidia 200 series. I assume that it shouldn't take too many months for this to drop the price because ATIs comparable cards are seriosuly competative in pricing. If you're not going for more intense gaming, you should be very happy running SL on the 8400GS.

I forget which model it was, but it was either the 9xxx series or the new 240 series that were having a large amount of failures.

I'll post it if I can find it.

Found it!!

Did you search the computer for keyloggers *BEFORE* changing the password? Was it attached to the internet at the time? I don't mean to be an alarmist...but well...this sentence gave me cause for alarm. This individual's behavior is beyond suspicious. He has had physical possession of the machine means that the machine itself cannot be trusted until given a thorough scan. If you don't feel confident doing that yourself find someone else that you *can* trust and send this a--hole the bill. If he balks get a lawyer. Heck even if he doesn't at least sit down with a lawyer that does free consultations. I get the hint you have a small-town politics concern and I feel your pain. But this is serious. Federally serious. BTW, not that *I'm* asking or have any reason to want to know - do not post an answer here - just for your own thought process...is your "email" password also your password for anything else? like bank accounts, paypal, or even SL? If so, get your machine *professionally* scanned. And change the password on everything AFTER the comp has been disinfected.
