How unethical was this, exactly?

There's no such thing as "No Home". You *always* have a home sim, once you hit maingrid, ...

Right. But the point with this account is, I've never left the Help Island for Mainland.

I met someone on Help Island once (actually the older Orientation Island) who was over a year old. He didn't speak English, and had never realized that there was more to Second Life. I managed to get the idea across to him finally, and he vanished in a flash.

Mentors are not "sent" and they are not official agents of Linden Lab at all. They are just volunteers who have signed up to help people, sworn to be tolerant and patient and try to be helpful, and they operate entirely on their own. They cruise around the Help Islands randomly, and they sometimes summon each other for help if the crowd is too big to handle alone, or they don't speak the right language, or need some other Mentor who is more knowledgable.

Doubtless the Mentor who appeared on "your" island just noticed that there was a lonely individual there (by looking at the Map) and went to see if you were stuck or something.

I think it's hillarious and cool that you have your own Help Island!

(Yes, I'm a Second Life Mentor too.)

Hmmmm....from what you and others have said, apparently the Help Islands are still in service for new registrants.

Since I've been the ONLY one there for two or three log-ins, I did assume that they had been replaced by some new version, just as the old Orientation Islands were replaced.

(This conclusion stems from the fact that I've made a new alt about every two or three months for over a year, out of interest in how LL is dealing with the First Hour Experience---and until this situation, I've never seen the Help Island (or earlier, Orientation Island) empty.)

I think they must of forgotten you or maybe they aren't as diligent as they were two years ago. When I registered, just over two years and two days ago, I got exactly 48 hours on Orientation Island before they dumped me in with all them hobos at Calleta.

That might be one of the practices that they discontinued in an effort to retain more new registrants. It can't have been fun for you to be so dumped! (Even if Calleta did turn out to be a useful place.)

Hundreds, if not thousands, of people use Linden owned land as their home every day. They're all servers like any other and surely are acceptable overhead for the sake of accepting and retaining new residents in Second Life. You decision to 'make camp' on the Help Island you landed in is pretty valid use of the place. Though, I think there may be a moment when your account times out and you're sent on your way to the main grid anyway.

This is useful information, as is all that people posted (I think I replied to everyone except Dante Tucker and Clarissa Lowell, both of whom posted interesting facts, too, and I thank you and the others.)

Just for the sake of all who have a passing interest in the way the New Resident experience evolves, I'll remember to post if, as you suggested, I'm eventually timed out and sent to Mainland.

For the moment, though, I'll try to remain in Toy Land....

Here's a picture of the map that I see of Help Islands on the grid. There are more but this is the smallest I could make them and still have the sim names show up.

Note that more of them are empty.

I believe there have been a good bit more online Help Islands in the past, although I never counted them.

I'm not sure what your point is there, because it hasn't been SENT to maingrid either. Its got a Home, and that home is a Help Island.

I can tell you exactly where your home was when you were on the help island. It was < 0,0,0 > on the Help Island you were in. That's a fact.

On a scale of one to ten with one being the tinniest possible example in the universe of un-ethical-ism, this example is a zero.

So Help Island is your Home location. In fact, it's the ONLY location you can log into. Although, as I said before, if your last Help Island is full when you log in, you get sent to an identical copy instead.
