What do you think of beauty pagaents? (don't know how to spell pagaents, lol)

Good?
Bad?
Indifferent?
Makes others feel ugly?
Has achievement value/has no achievement value for both model and designers

Any opinions?

Pageants :)

I'm indifferent to them, but everyone is beautiful on SL, well most anyway.

My opinion? Ridiculous and pointless, and based on previous pagaents, often scams.

Would you care to elaborate on why you think they are often scams?

I would guess she is referring to the pay to vote schemes.

I always figured SL pageants were probably just another popularity contest and if you weren't already known in the right circles you would not have a chance. I'll admit I could be wrong.

Highly doubtful.

They may not be scams, but as others have said, we all can be as beautifuk as we want in an instant, either by our own design or by paying for it. The idea of beauty pageants seem pointless to me.

don't care much about them to be honest, except for the artistic value of the pictures anyway, I love to see how people can present their av artfully

No, you are not wrong. This is how it has ALWAYS been since my first 'beauty' contest in '03, and i do not see it changing in the foreseeable future. It always comes down to who you know or how many know you and how many of them you can get to come vote for you.

What is the purpose of having a beauty pageant anyway? To celebrate our obsessions with shallow appearance and Lookism?

I have no interest in such.

I can imagine reasons why an SL beauty pageant could make sense- if it had a tie in with promoting content (skins, hair, fashion), or if it had something to do with the SL modeling industry (which I don't fully understand; but it exists, and if someone is exchanging money for it, it must be useful to someone).

Though the latter purposes make a beauty pageant seem like a more reasonable idea, it still wouldn't excite me personally.

That is true. There are some avatars that just knock me over in their beauty, be it in the coventional sense, or the wildly creativeones. Some of them a regulars here. There are notables in my book, the time and efort they take in creating teir look and putting it all together really is amazing. Consdiering SL's graphics are considered outdated, there are truly some stunningly beautiful/handsome walking artworks round here.

Well I guess the obsession is the point, if SL mimics RL then the obsession with beauty and what you call shallow, will carry on over to SL

I did meet one person that was very much caught up in how beautiful she could get her avatar to look and she very much needed others to confirm that beauty to her -- but then she also said that she has a disfigured face in RL and just wants very very much to see if she can experience a little bit of what it would be like for people to see her as beautiful. I guess in those cases, I can understand a bit of the pull. In one way or another, I imagine all or at least most of the pageant folks are trying to fill some void with it.

You mean like the sort I make and sell? Why would they be considered scams? A scam is where you get something you don't expect or do not get something you did expect.
If you expect to pay to vote and when you vote you get a vote then you got what you paid for and nobody forced you to do it either.

I must admit I love how people bandy the word scam around for all kinds of things that are in fact not scams lol.

Now if you are talking about the cheating that goes on, fair enough that is a problem, one that good contest owners can mitigate but it is still not a scam. A scam would have to be carried out by the contest owners not by the contestants or voters.

I have never entered a beauty pageant and probably never will, but I can't see anything wrong with them. I do go in for 'best in' contests sometimes, mainly because I happen to be going to a club anyway - occasionally I win something.
Pageants might be 'shallow' but I think shallowness is OK in SL, a bit of harmless fun (unless you have to pay to enter and the result is fixed!).

I don't care but there are people who make money for those contest.
It's not really my thing, I figure it just another way to get money.
Making money I guess isn't bad thing or neccessarily a scam but what I have
seen is most of it is type of popularity contest, where people pay to get certain person to win not sure what those who pay get out of it though.

I've attended beauty pageants like Miss SL Universe, where there was voting by a panel of chosen judges (who hopefully were impartial, heh.) Seemed pretty fair to me.

the thing about the pay to vote thing is that it can be gamed so much. And the winner might not be the one with the prettiest avatar, but instead the one who has the most friends or the most money to bribe...which sort of makes it pointless.

The panel of impartial judges thing is much better.
