i have a TON of inventory i want to unload, but i hate to just delete it. i usually keep a little section on my land for such sales, but i'm low on prims so i haven't been able to place stuff out lately. i'll have to rent a place to do this, but i'm going to place it out in a yard sale type fashion, and i need a little advice. 1) what is a fair price to sell no copy/transfer items for? i typically do L$0-L$50, depending on what i paid for it originally. 2) what is the best way to lay it out? organized like a finished room, or on tables/grouped according to genre? 3) what sorts of items will people want that's probably old news in SL now (2 years or less)?

The past couple of yard sales I attended had all the stuff laid out, was mostly furniture and plants, and was roughly 75% of the then retail cost. I bought several items, and also plan on doing my own yard sale soon. In fact, I was thinking about making it a "neighborhood" block sale and letting others put stuff up too.

Honeybear, count me in!! (Of course I don't live in your neighborhood and I wasn't invited, but I've never been one to worry over the trivialities....) Hubby and I might have land available for this depending on how many prim we're talking.

Since my sim is down to less than 1200 prims, I'd have to be cautious about how much stuff went out. My thought was to put groups of furniture that I'm selling out in a display, shoot the picture and then put it all in a prim. I can't do anything until after Friday though because I've promised someone could use the sim for a wedding...and I'm still trying to get all my stuff together. But if anyone is interested in doing this, contact me inworld tonight.

i would LOVE a group sale. i've been to them (for hair & clothing) and i love those deals. i agree with Phil about the freebies. they can not be sold at a cost. if i have any freebies in my inventory that i put out, i will make them L$0. if they are quality, i hate to throw them away.
i agree about boxing the products to save on prims, but the uploading costs of the textures will outweigh the income of the sales.

Honeybear, perhaps a "ring" could be organized, where folks tp from one yard sale to the next, with tps at each spot for the next on the list?? That would help to conserve prim....

If this is for a limited period, I have over 5000 spare prims and I wouldn't mind hosting it if it helps.

Like...maybe...put it up for a one week period (and set it far enough out to give people time to get ready for it). Allocate a prim limit per person, depending on how many people join in. And please put me on the list of definite people.

Oddly enough, I was thinking of about a week. The time isn't important for the prims, but it's not something that I'd want to go on and on and on, like a semi-permanent thing.
If the others (Arielyn and 3ring) want to do it that way, say so and I'll set it up.
There is a question:- How will people find it? Will the participants advertise in search, perhaps using their own areas for the landing points? To be fair to me, I wouldn't want to place a sign in the store because it could/would take customers away to possibly buy there instead - if you see what I mean. That's in the case of furniture, of course. If there is no furniture, then I'd put signs in the store, but I'd prefer that the particpants are not restricted as to what can be placed there.
[added] I just realised that only I could advertise, but I'd do that on behalf of each particpant.

I have a yard sale area on the Lebettu Harbor pier. Anyone's free to set out their items for sale here...if they don't move in a couple of weeks and/or I get tired of looking at them, I'll return them or delete them, your preference.
Please put out original items...no vendor prims that give a copy. There are instructions posted to the buyers to pay for the item and then Take it into their inventory.
First come, first served, both for buyers and sellers. No charge. Management reserves the right to refuse service to anyone.

OK...so, we have a few options here. Thanks Phil and Lin Let me mull this over Phil, with regard to your post. For my own yard sale, I used an unused skybox and advertised that space, and then changed it back. Hm.

Ok. That's 2 out of 3 so far (I'll assume 3Ring). I'll set up a flat area high in the sky (unless anyone has any objections to it being high in the sky). I have 3/4 of the sim to play with but I'll start out smallish and extend the area if and when needed.

Being a yard sale junkie (I am in constant search for couples dance balls), I can tell you that if you place listings in the Events tab of the Search with the title of "Yard Sale", you will have plenty of traffic.

Agreed. One of the only things I use the events section for is looking for yard sales, and when I've held them that was plenty of advertising to get stuff sold. I found good (Heart gardens) plants, poseballs (including couples dances) and adult furniture sold almost immediately. Whom ever does the write up, I think you'll attract more people if you make it clear this is an actual inventory cleaning yard sale held by a large group of people, not an ongoing flea market. Ads like that always get my attention. My name is Nimue Jewell, and I am a yard sale-o-holic.

I would be interested in unloading some of my inventory (got plenty of stuff from before I got into making my own stuff)
especially clothes, shoes and boots.
is someone going to post somewhere here to let folks know if this is going to take place, when and how to get in?

I'll get with Phil and others this weekend to see what we can pull together. Just too much going on during the week.

gosh Phil, that's great. thanks. if you want, we could make a 64m landing point. i'll pay the 30L to have it listed for the week. we could also list it in events, because i think a temp yard sale qualifies. someone else will have to say for certain if that's allowed. the best group yard sale i went to was set up in sections. it totally worked. if we place stuff out in sections - hair over here, clothing over there, furniture in that corner, yard decor on that side, etc .... you should totally put out a TP to your store from that furniture section. i have clothing and yard stuffs and some wierdo furniture - nothing that would compete with your store (imo). i'd be happy to help set it up if you want. it won't take long to use up 5000 prims if lots of poeple put out there stuff. some of my items are primmy. shoes, for example. i would put them in a box i think - or maybe one of them - display the other. i dunno - we'll have to collaberate.

It's got me thinking it over now. There were 3 people who wanted to sell off some of their inventory at the time and, to be honest, I wasn't expecting more to join in. I was thinking more in terms of doing those people a favour rather than a general forum event. Let's see what Honeybear comes up with after she's mulled it over, shall we. Arielyn's idea of a "ring" of locations might be a good one if it turns into a general forum thing.

With less than 1200 prims available on my sim, I'll be limited on how many people I can let get involved at one time, but I'll work something out

It's not the prims, Honey, although some individual items can gobble up prims like there's no tomorrow. The "count me in" additions took me by surprise as it looked like turning into a general forum thing, which I hadn't envisaged, and I needed to give it some thought. But I don't see why we can't do it (now that I've got my breath back)
I think 3Ring's idea of having different item types in different areas is good, and I can put large signs up to point people to the different areas, and even colour code the areas.
Perhaps a few of us could arrange a get-together to decide such things?
