Hello,

Does anyone know how to remove that first and last name from the login screen? I remeber it can be done in the shortcut preferences, but I forgot how. I was trying to google it again, but no luck.

Thanks!!!

Didn't work. After logging out I started the viewer again, cleared out the name fields and closed the viewer. When I started it again the name of the last logged in avatar was back.

You need to clear it every time I believe. It's a Cookie thing ;)

You are correct. I just tried that and it does not work.

I don't think this feature exists, though it would be nice.

Somebody JIRA it - I'll vote.

I removed the LL shortcut ages ago and just use a one click logon now. That way my friends don't know my names. Heck they can't even tell they are for SL cause I changed the icons and names

it's not about keeping them a secret, sometimes it's just privacy stuff. Like not giving out passwords.

Not off the top of my head. There are some old forum posts about it...let me see...

It won't stop your name from showing up at login if you use the normal shortcut BUT it eliminates the need for that shortcut.

Thanks eveyone,

There is a function. I know that in the shortcut preferences you can write something like
-firstname = 0, or -firstname"0" or somethign like that. I had it on my old shortcut, but I deleted it by accident and now I do not remember what the exact formula was, and cannot find it anywhere.

just set your browser to NOT remember passwords, forms and search bars - clear cookies and close browser.

reopen. viola! you are undetectable.

If you don't want to clear cookies etc. which would mean you'd lose the passwords to every site you visit on the net, try this:

After you have logged out with your main account, log an alt in and out again and the name that comes up on the screen next time will be the alt. The name boxes won't be blank, but the ID of your main will be protected.

Cossy look at my link I think that might be similar. It's likly a target change you are thinking of on the SL shortcut.

you can also target specific cookies. open the list, type in "second" and just delete only the second life cookies.

Coding a login name and password on a shortcut properties line is incredibly unsafe as far as the idea of protecting something. Even if the shortcut is renamed, it is still right there for anyone to see.

I don't think that does anything about keeping your SL avatar name from showing on the SL login screen (not the website screens). Whatever the last account logged in via that viewer was, that is what will appear.

The only way I can find to prevent your real usernames from showing on the login screen is to intentionally set an autologin attempt to FAIL using a bogus firstname, lastname, and password.

From: someone
as in:
--login Cranky Bitch 123456

Gives you the failed login/password box, but the usernames shown in the login screen will be those you specify in the login parameter, NOT of any real account names you might have used.

I found where the last logged in name is stored, but you would have to edit the file every time you logged out -- probably easier to do a quick bad login with a bogus name.

Anyway, the file is the 'settings.xml' file in (windows location):
c:\Documents and Settings\< pc-login-name >\Application Data\SecondLife\user_settings

I have a "settings.xml" for the current regular viewer and then I also have one for my older Nicholaz viewers, the Release Candidate install, and my snowglobe install.

Even if you do manage to keep the avi name off of the login screen, anyone that looks in that SecondLife folder will see all avi names that have ever attempted to log in.

OK, nevermind my above post, though it IS an easy workaround.. here's the real method:

Go to C:\Documents and Settings\*user name*\Application Data\SecondLife\user_settings
and open up the settings.xml file with notepad.

You can use EDIT-->FIND to make searching for the strings easier by finding the words first and last.

Change the first name section from:

By removing your name from the 3rd set of string parameters.

Do the same for the last name section and hit FILE-->SAVE. Close Notepad.
Then Right-click on the settings.xml file, choose properties, and at the bottom under Attributes.. check the "read only" box. Then hit OK.

Done :D

The folder locations will be slightly different for Vista, Completely different for something else.

Except you then have to change those properties back if you want to change any of your Preferences.

That's true, though most of them will change in game during that session, they just won't be remembered for the next login. Just have SL setup somewhat the way you like it before setting read only.

How to wipe a login name from someone else's computer:

Login as Barack Obama password XYZ and get the "username or password incorrect" error. The next time someone will start the viewer, the login name will show as Barack Obama. :D
Delete any personal data left in the windows folders (as mentioned here).

Viola!
