TO ban or not to ban?

I'm planning on using a large portion of my land as a public meeting place soon, for serious Dom/mes and subs to find one another (Since the only place I can find is Bondage Ranch, which is full of those that have no idea what they are doing, and often run around with their plastic dicks out.. sometimes on their foreheads...) and such.... but I'm not sure whether to put up banlines around my Home. I plan on having some sort of security peopleses to make sure people aren't being douches (Not immediately, but if it starts actually getting used) and such, but I don't particularly want people wandering into my house if the security person is busy or something.....

I don't like the idea of having banlines around a public meeting place that I've built, but at the same time I don't want people in my Home uninvited...

SO.. should I seperate my Home into a different parcel and restrict access do you think? Or... would it make sense to leave it open for now?

And no.. I'm not buying a security orb.. I don't like them, Plain and simple.

Why not cordon off your home with a wall, fence, etc. Most people will get the idea.

If anybody else wanders in anyway, you could evict him if he starts being a nuisance or just let him walk around and admire your home when it does not matter.

It's not that he could steal anything or leave the place dirty, so why worry?

I currently have a fence up actually.. though not gated... I suppose thats right though, they should get the point, and if they dont... ban ^^

If you're not going to use an orb and not planning to have someone in your house keeping people out, I don't see any other option other than to separate your home on a different parcel and put up banlines.

Personally, I don't like banlines because they're ugly, unfriendly, and contribute to a general ill-will. Especially since you're inviting the public to part of your land--they may find it inconvenient to fly around if a portion of it is banned. You could try banning individual avatars that are causing problems in your house rather than put up the lines.

Once again with the ugly.. as long as you avoid alpha textures (As you generally should in my opinion if possible) they aren't really all that bad...

And my land is rather large, the main area I'll be setting up for the 'meeting area' is about 2500m total, and theres a 6m stream on one edge of my Home area, and such, so they generally wouldn't get that close unless they were really trying... And the flying.. my Home itself actually kinda blocks off the land behind it from the rest of my property, as there is a steep hill on one side and a large building on the other, like right there...

If you don't want a Gorean and a Furrie to use your home for their illicit love affair, you better use the ban lines.

If it were me, as I abhor banlines, I would get an orb for my residence. But, you are within your rights to use banlines if that is what you wish.

Psychs (sp?) security orbs can be set to just send out a warning and do not take any other action, to let intruders know they are not welcome. That would probably discourage most intruders. And you can then specifically ban only those that prove to be a problem.

Ill probably do nothing for now, and see if I end up having many problems.. and limiting access if I do

I would definitely make it a separate parcel - that gives you plenty of options down the road, whether it's music, prim control, banning, etc. You can leave it wide open initially and see how it goes, then put up whatever controls make the most sense to you. To be honest, I can't see what the down side is. maybe someone else can....

I'm not into the scene, but wouldn't a set of harsh-looking parcel banlines around a suitably ominous-looking house fit right into the BDSM picture? "Submit, slave, or you go in - [scary pause] - THERE!"

lol.. my Home isn't exactly ominous.. its a big white brick and gold pillar/dome house... though they are freebie textures until I have time to find ones I like and replace.... it will become darker >.>

Okiphia, do you have one of the freebie visitor counters?

I have one that has an editable script, so I can easily define the scan range. All it does it is make a list of who has come within range. After putting it down and starting it, you say "say list" to see a list of avs who've entered the range, and "reset list" to clear the list and start anew.

I use this at my home to identify squatters (people who've decided to use my home regularly without my permission). If someone shows up once or twice, I don't mind, but if they are in my house every day for two weeks, they get banned.

You could easily use this to see just how many people are actually venturing into your home while you are away. You may find that people are respecting the fence, and that you don't need the banlines or security orb.

Ooh wonderful Idea.. I do actually have one up currently, I hadn't thought about that use, thank you!!

I also just realized, my pet is often Home when she's online now, so if she is, she might deter them just by being her lol.. she's rather.. aggressive ^^

I like orbs a lot more than ban lines, especially since you can config them to do what you want: IM, popup, shout, how long to wait before doing something more severe, and what that should be.

The best plan is to make it visually obvious that it's no longer public property, with a backup system that starts gentle and gets more severe if necessary (e.g., orb with long delay and then bump back or TP home, or just a visitor counter and explicitly ban any repeat offenders).

You can also have an object at the gate entry that chats or notecards to please respect your privacy. I bet you can find a free one, and if not, ask me ingame.

Why exactly would people be ungrateful? I'm trying to help the serious people find other serious people. Whats wrong with that?

Just curious why not. I've been vaguely thinking of scripting a little "warning only" orb-like thing (in my case, it has to be something scripted, because I'm only interested in altitudes way above whitelist banlines, and only want to hint that the space is "by invitation" or something like that), so I'm interested in what it is about orbs that folks find off-putting, so I can avoid doing that.
