From: Elgyfu Wishbringer I have spent the last three years trying to find ways to create hightly detailed prefabs with uber-low prims counts. ... Sure, low prim does mean some compromises - the skill (in my humble opinion) is creating something that doesn't LOOK low prim at all. Quoting this just because it's the response closest to--but still distant from--my own radical view. Perhaps a victim of subliminal Mies indoctrination at an early age, I really find non-functional, "ornamental" prims aesthetically offensive. Admittedly, while "theme-building", I'll sometimes cheat and make textures that add ornamental surface detail that could be mistaken for prims, and am more than willing to carve the hell out of a prim to get more surfaces to work with or to form an exotic shape, but down deep, I really prefer to leave the messy detail of RL behind when designing for SL. I've been impressed by the primmy detail of builds that emulate RL--for about a minute. Then this nagging queasiness grows to a kind of revulsion: it's not enough; it can never be enough; it is fighting a battle that can never be won. And then, again, prim count becomes a kitsch metric for me, and I fly off somewhere low-prim and feel clean again.

From: Brenda Archer One of the most beautiful things I have is a crystal vase full of red roses that takes up almost 117 prims ..... Brenda, you would only truly appreciate something like that sitting on the 245 prim club chair I once saw for sale. It did look quite amazing (for a pre-sculptie item), but I passed on buying it.

Can you really make multiple staircase steps in one prim with path cut? Actually, come to think of it, I'm sure I've heard somewhere else that you can, too.
Anyway. Ahem. It's a great goal to make things with few prims, but for new people often trying to start low-prim winds up frustrating - like, for example, replacing four prims making a window frame with a hollowed cube, but then finding it doesn't look quite right because it's a rectangle so the hollowed edges aren't all the same thickness, that kind of thing.. while I agree it would be better to avoid high prim builds I can understand why new folks do them, because low-prim building can leave you feeling out of control of the things like that.
Sculpties.. I don't think anyone can _expect_ others to use them, just because the lack of editing support for them in SL.

From: Yumi Murakami Can you really make multiple staircase steps in one prim with path cut? 2 steps is pretty simple, just cut one of the corners out to get an L shape. As to the sentiments expressed by the OP: I do think there's a time and a place for primmed details, and I don't think there's anything wrong with buying primmy objects if you've got the prims to spare. Like anything else though (in SL or FL equally), just because it has "more" doesn't make it "better". I'd have to see and decide for myself if it suited my needs.

I may have just bought this boat/yacht in question and i have no problem with it. I think the count is 557 prims with full sails and cannons ( i intend to use it for an upcoming party). And i did pay 9k. Looking at all the others i could find on search they didn't match up. To me prims aren't too much an issue as i have my own sim.
Prims are in the eye of the beholder i think and what the individual is wanting to get from the object. I have sex beds i sell with 6 balls or more and my builds vary from 8 prims on up to about 64. To me it's more about being able to cater to all. I feel the more prims the more detail an object should have in my eyes.

I am really bad for buying shoes and boots that are so high prim that they should be illegal. My favorite pair of boots are 400 prim each. Couple that with the guns, knives, belts, and gadgets strapped to me and its a wonder I can log in at all. : )
This is a major problem that LL needs to address, because high prim clothing etc is good for the SL economy. Make me a great looking gun or pair of shoes, and I'll buy it for whatever ridiculous price you put on it, and I know a lot of people who feel the same way. It's absurd that we have to watch what we wear and build because the grid can't handle it.

Ok, here goes my SL economic philosophy (reality based)
Back when I started my business, first land was still a widely used program. I built a line of "starter" houses that were low prim and reasonably priced for people on 512's. Those houses sold ok, but not earth shattering. What sold - and continues to sell - are my higher prim "palaces."
Low prim (under 40) houses sold last month = 16 Moderate prim (40 - 60) sold last month = 24 Higher prim houses (100+) sold last month = 50
There is a huge dividing line between people who are willing to spend entertainment money in SL to "play" and those who aren't. Someone on a 512 or 1024 is going to be prim and cost conscious and they have large numbers of free and low prim-low cost items available to them. Content creators really have to choose which market they are going to build for because the two markets are entirely separate and look for entirely separate things when they shop. Somebody who decided to spend $25 a month in tier is going to shop differently than someone spending $5 a month....

So SL is like cars: Economy Mid-Sized Hummer Then again if someone can make an Economy Hummer, they'll probably sell a million

Exactly. When sculpty skills are commonplace enough that someone like me can make an architecturally striking build that rings in at 20 prims total, then a lot of things will change. We aren't there yet.
