If you confined your comments to the process of age verification then I wouldn't want to ask your qualifications for commenting on how parents should or should not manage their kids' internet access. Stick to your knitting!

It certainly won't be significantly less effective.

True but we don't have gunfights her in Oz, so axe/shovel throwing cans of beans is about as bad as it gets. If you are involved in a gunfight then it very likely they are there to kill you not rob you and the first you will know about it is the first shot fired, if thay have half a brain.
I think it does take more effort for a minor to get your creditcard details and SSN than just clicking a checkbox myself as this isn't the sort of information I would leave lying around the house for my kid or possibly less scrupleous friends to access.

Lord - Was the internet text-only when your kids were kids?

LOL almost but not quite, there were some pictures apart from Usenet and Netscrape was the good browser at that time, so long ago

When my kids were younger the Computer was in a public area where someone could walk past at any time. They alsohad it drilled into them if they were caught in any site that was not suitable then the net would be removed. We had pre paid dial up for some time so they knew it was something to be careful with.
As they got older and we got broadband supivision was relaxed but not totally, Now they are 16 and almost 18 i trust them. I know they are not often on the net when they are on the comp in their bedrooms because if the net drops they dont call out to tell me.

Both have see SL when I havebeen in there and neither have any interest, both feel it should have age verification but also wonder why kids would bother with SL.
