Yep, it's on all four. Let me test. Brb.

Ok, same sim, same spot. FPS between 18.9 and 22.1.

So... Not much change setting it to use just two cores?

Nope. It would be pretty awesome if they had a client optimized for quad-core processors.

I have hear that in SL the processor actually matters more than the vid card.

For giggles, set affinity to just one processor.

IIRC, what they did with the multi-processor stuff was to move texture decoding off to a separate thread. I don't know if there's anything else in the viewer code that's really a separate, CPU-intensive function that could be moved to yet another thread to take advantage of quad cores. Maybe they could move the cache stuff to another thread or even have multiple texture decode threads. I don't know enough about how the viewer works to say much here, without sounding like I'm just making stuff up.. :)

With SL being as complex as it is and with there being such a huge variety of PC hardware out there, I'm not sure I buy that as a good, general statement. _Every_ chain has a weakest link..

I just turned on multiple threads fromt he client menu and am now getting 18.9 fps!

I'm sure I'll get better when I get a new card.

Thanks, you guys are very helpful.

PS: I just hit 20! Woo Hoo!

Ha! Yeah, that was me!

Lol

Have to test the affinity+multiple threads settings on one processor later. Have to actually work now. Will post back.

Ok, affinity set to CPU0, multi threading on, same spot. Now getting around 25 FPS.

?

Strange.

I'm on 3Gb RAM, Vista and quad core. I've not touched affinity. Worked swell straight out of the box .. but that is Intel CPU and nVidia graphics

Same set up for me too, only dual core. Don't have to set affinity - that was supposedly taken care of a couple of viewers ago. nVidia 8600GT card - I haven't had any problems with Vista as some have...curious.

I have noticed though over the last 2 days some jerky movement in texture heavy sims. It's irritating.

Clearly, it works with multiple cores, it just works better with one core. I'm too lazy to set that every time, though, so it normally works for me. Both laptop and desktop are dual core machines.

It has it's moments. I imaging SL is not the easiest game to code and maintain. I am glad it works and I can get on and visit with people, so I"m happy.

I too am too lazy to keep setting affinity. The multi thread setting works fine so I'll just do that. Later I'll get a better card.

Thank you everyone who helped me with this.

If you are wondering about cores and CPU load, just hit control alt delete and call up task manager and look at performance. CPU Usage History will show you each of your cores and how much of the processor capacity is being used.

Ick.... I played with that affinity stuff yesterday. It wasn't a pretty picture. (>_<;) My computer is SL friendly as-is and I'm not gonna mess with it like that again.

But, I did find when I was on together with my alt. If I gave one client affinity to two cores, and the other got the next pair, it was TONS more stable. (^_^) She didn't even crash me when I logged her off. \(^_^)/

That makes sense, since you're telling one client to use one half the CPU and the other client to use the other half - Steely said above that when he didn't poke at the affinity, SL seemed to spread across all 4 cores.

I'd guess that if you wanted to run 4 clients at once on a quad core, you'd probably get best results if you turned off the multiple threads stuff and set each client to run on a different core.

Hmmm, that's an interesting idea. Might have to try that.
