Help!!

My avi is all gray except for my head. Here is what I've done to fix it, but nothing has worked:

I tried restarting SL
I tried emptying my cache
I tried going into advanced controls and rebaking the textures
I tried going into advanced controls and forced the params
I reset my modem
I reset my firewall.

So, someone please give me the solution!! I have two avis, and the other one is just fine. GRRR!

does it do it with the skin only? or when you wear certain outfits?
if its the skin, there was an issue where some skins/parts of skins were turning black when certain items were being worn. i had it when i wore boots.

if it's the outfit, and you have a copy/no trans version, try deleting the first outfit and taking another copy out the package. if that doesn't work, try the snowglobe viewer. it cleared up a lot of issues i was having with gray body parts.

ETA: before switching viewers, try deleting SL from your computer, folders and all. and re-downloading it.

I am using the snowglobe viewer. And it's just my body, not my head or any attachements. My hair, shoes and bracelet show.

Then try loading the 1.22.11 client and see if that fixes it for you. You can get it here:

http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Old_versions

Both the 1.23.4 official client and the Snowglobe client have some very buggy code. 1.22.11 is far more reliable and stable.

was just curious to know if it was with certain clothing items, or if its the skin itself.
it could be a compatibility issue. try going back to the last version of SL you used, SG is still fairly new, and still has bugs, that could be one of them.

Do any non-prim parts of either avatar show up correctly?

Now I'm going to show my ignorance and say I don't know which parts would be non-prim.

non prim objects would be the pants/shirt/ underwear etc, layer of your clothing.

try going back to the viewer suggested by Cee, that should help.

Prims are attachments.. Er.. Anything that has a little box icon in inventory. Or anything you can right-click on and get an Edit option.

edit: the reason I ask is that non-prim stuff requires your viewer to upload the texture to SL. Prim stuff does not. If both your accounts are not showing any non-prim bits and the problem happens in different regions, I'd suspect your firewall needs some ports opened up.

.

You need to reset you AV.

Go to the Advanced Menu at the top of the UI.

(If you do not have an Advanced Menu press CTRL+ALT+D)

On the Advanced Menu go to:

Character>Character Tests>Test Female

Doing this will reset your AV. You will look like a noob again but just put on the shape, skin, ect... you are using now and you should be fine.

did You switch back to the viewer that Ceera suggested? i'll repost the link for You. if that does not help, check to see if your drivers, especially your video ones need an update.

http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Old_versions

just copy/paste into your browser window. make sure you delete ALL of your SL files from Your computer so it will install clean.

I totaly did a clean install with two of the older versions. The one you suggested, and then a few earlier than that. It still did not work.

I tried two different skins and I still don't have anything.

I also tried as someone suggested that I try to do a character test and set it back to it's original. That did not work either. I was still gray even with the original skin and shape I recieved on day one.

Other suggestions?? I'd about try anything at this point--standing on my head maybe--I didn't try that one! LOL!

A funny new issue
I tried to force the params once again to see if this would change anything
and my friends now tell me that I am a head floating above nothing.
On my end all I see is a cloud--no head no nothing.

HELP!!!!

I just tried it using a computer with a gaming video card, and I still get the gray. Have any other suggestions?

I'm wondering about the force params....I couldn't get it from being a cloud. I wonder if something went corrupt.

With both the 1.23.4 and Snowglobe clients I have see the "just a floating head" phenomenon, but not the "missing" body parts being visible but solid grey.

If you have triggered either of the above clients to show the "missing legs/torso/head glitch", and then downgrade to the 1.22.11 client, you may still see it in 1.22.11 until you clear cache and re-bake your character textures (An option on the "Advanced > Character > Rebake Textures" menu choice, or Ctri-Alt-R on a PC.

Go to the Help menu, select the last thing, which should be "About Second Life", and copy the info in the top panel of the resulting dialog, and paste it here. That will give us a lot more information on your client version, graphics card and OS version, so we can help track this down for you.

It is fixed!!

I started thinking about all of the suggestions, and here is what I did in the order of operations:

1. Removed all SL from my computer and any folders.
2. Installed the latest version of Snowglobe
3. Forced Params
4. Logged off
5. Logged back on (the avi was still a cloud)
6. Went into preferences and cleared the cache
7. Logged off
8. Logged back on (the avi was yet a cloud)
9. Rebaked Textures

and viola! I'm back in action.

I think it was the combination of these actions rather than helter skelter that got my avi back from the body snatchers.

Thanks everyone for alll of your help. The SL community is amazing.

Just for a test:

GO to a Mature or Adult sandbox or place

Go to inventory, search for ";(WORN" and remove EVERYTHING except shape and skin

Then go to library, look in clothing and take any avatar you like and wear the shape and skin from there.

If you are fine after that, any of your inventory items may be in a defective state.

missing parts
08-15-2009 04:14
a friend of mine is sorta havin the same prob as the OP, only half her head is missing - she uses snowglobe and it was all right yesterday and her puter specs are ok....it just looks like the top of her head is cut off, the hair looks fine, but we can see her eyes from inside. I want to tell her to try what the OP did since it worked for her, but can someone explain what 'force params' is please?
