I got a message from my SL fiancee telling me that she will be unable to log in and see me for a while, as she is very busy in her RL..
Now I do know that she is able to receive my offline messages through her e-mail address, does anyone know just how many offline IM's I can send before they are capped???
Also if her IM's do get capped will she still receive the message via her e-mail???

Sorry to be a pain in the butt with such a question, but I have some news for her, also I want to tell her that I am missing her, and can't wait to see her again...

They get capped whether or not they get sent to email.

I thought that all IMs still went to email even after they get capped, but that may not be true. I do get tons and tons of email from SL each day but most of them are group notices and inventory offers.

Also - If there is a limit on the length of an IM, it is pretty darn big, so just don't hit enter very often and make each IM really really long if you need to.

/me notes to experiment with these IM issues with an alt

In my experience, IM's that are supposed to go to email when someone is offline don't always arrive, cap or no cap, and there's no rhyme nor reason to it. If I were you I'd send her email to be sure any important messages get through.

It's lovely when someone takes the time to send email separately from SL, even if it's just a line or two. To me it reinforces the idea of being thought of as a person with feelings and not just as my av inworld. :)

I get the vast majority of IMs that go to email, cap or not. Capping just limits the amount that you see when you log in.

Make sure one of those IMS is giving her a Email address she can contact you with?

Id really suggest that for everyone who gets partnered .. they trade emails.

if people want to keep Rl/SL separate can always use Yahoo or Gmail, etc.

I have never missed getting an IM to email that I actually see inworld once I log in, but I have no clue if I sometimes miss getting IMs to email after they get capped. If so, then whoever sent the IM has never mentioned my not responding to it.

I do know that I miss many of my group notices going to email and some do not even get delivered inworld whether I am logged on or not -- receiving of group notices seems to be totally random.

Combine that with Group chat randomly not working worth a damn while logged in and SL communication might all be a crap shoot these days.

In the recent past, if I got an offline IM from someone in world, within a certain amount of time I could reply to that IM and the sender would get it in world.

Now, even if I send the reply back immediately, I get it sent back to me by my email provider (Yahoo) saying "undeliverable." Anyone know what's up with that?

No idea, I use Gmail with no problems. Maybe LL blocks Yahoo because of spam issues?

I use yahoo and everything gets through, sometimes wished it didn't but then yahoo has a spam filter and a lot of my group messages go there...

Yeah, I've had no trouble sending replies from gmail, but haven't tried with yahoo (although I could, actually... I have an alt registered with a yahoo email account, I think).

But very recently, just FYI, I've gotten one offline IM to email that never appeared in-world, and I was nowhere near the cap.

From my limited experience, I think I'm getting emailed IMs that are capped in-world, most of the time. And most of the time, uncapped IMs go to email and to in-world when you login. And some just don't get delivered to one or the other destination (or possibly both--who'd know?) for no apparent reason.

English is not my native language, so forgive my ignorance. But what exactly does it mean: IM's are being 'capped'? I also have IM's getting forwarded to my Hotmail-account when I'm offline, but I don't understand what 'capped' means.

It means there is a limit (a cap) on the number of IMs that can be stored when you're offline, to be received later. After that limit they disappear, never to be seen again unless you have them sent to email. I'm not sure how many it is, I expect it's noted somewhere.

When this happens it would make more sense if you got a notification telling you the person's limit had been exceeded and your IM wasn't being passed on.

YES.

That would cut down seriously on false accusations against merchants "never responding to IMs."

It is either 20 or 25 -- I forget which.

Except that merchants should always have the offline IMs going to email.

My alt *does*. And gets capped anyways.

Ah , thanks Aeslyn. Cap = hat = limit. Makes sense. :)

@ Beezle: are you sure IM's are capped, even when you have them forwarded to e-mail?

The cap is on the amount of stuff you see when logging in.

I don't know in my other account I use to get lot of group notices even after they were capped.
Never remember seeing more then 10 when I did finally login but maybe I miscounted.
But I still keep getting group announcements even weeks not logging in that account.

I'll just chip in to say that my IM's come to my email and I'm not aware of ever missing one. I spend more time in image editing programs than in world and it seems like I get a lot of IM's everyday that come to email. But maybe as many as some people. I get my email directly from my own website server.

But are you sending her that many messages to be worried about them being capped?
Be careful, that in itself is a turnoff.

from what I understood she won't be logging in for quite some time, he worried they will eventually stop reaching her before the time in the future she logs again

I can say most definitely that my messages get capped. I've had IM's to email turned on for years now and many times I've logged in to a notecard a customer has sent as a backup to IM (which had not been received).

I have no idea why it happens to some and not others... another mystery of SL, but I am getting a little tired of constantly hearing others telling anyone who will listen the merchants who 'claim' their messages get capped are lying.

The cap limit is SUPPOSED to be 100, according to the Wiki. However, enough people have told me they get capped earlier that I question that number.

The limit on the length of an individual IM is 1023 characters...a pretty long string of text.
