Considering that the new server code that was supposed to increase stability has almost trashed the grid and had to be rolled back, how much faith can we have in LL's ability to keep SL viable?

Implementing upgrades to an existing living network like Second Life is a bit tricky. Expect bumps along the road. I have been involved in doing exactly that. I have been involved in upgrading and making major changes on mission critical networks for major commercial and government organizations and never once have we had any problems like this. The reason? We carefully planned, tested and implemented any changes knowing ahead of time where our critical failure points were and having plans to deal with unexpected issues and to back out without causing any service interuptions. Not all upgrades go as planned but anytime you do an upgrade to a live network and what you are doing causes disruption to the users of that network you are doing something wrong. You either need to rethink your methodology or you need to arrange to take that network offline at a time convienient to your users for the upgrade. We are cusotemrs of LL and many of us are paying htem large sums of money and we deserve to be treated as valued customers not as inconvieniences. _____________________

Ravanne why don't you take your expertise to LL?
I'm sure with your extensive and impressive resume you would be a valuable asset to LL. I think they are almost always hiring talent. Perhaps eventually you could make it all run in a way that would please everybody all of the time. Right? |

Lowen - WELL SAID!!!!! There is absolutely no way to completely test upgrades ahead of time under the load the grid presents. The thousands of servers and (guessing) millions of lines of code all interacting with each other is mind blowing. It never ceases to amaze me that it all works as good as it does.
I would like to see grid stability ahead of new features too, but I am not privy to all that goes on behind closed doors at Linden Lab. A lot of the decisions they make frustrate me, but I give them due credit for the BLEEDING EDGE technology they bring us. It is my choice to be here and only grumble a little bit every now and then. I (and everyone else) can make the decision to leave at any time. I CHOOSE TO STAY!!! Keep up the good work Lindens. |

Actually I have considered working for them. But I got out of the business and the reasons I did are still valid and preclude me from doing so. There are people out there who make their livings planning and implementing complex mission critical live upgrades to systems, perhaps LL should look in to hireing one or more of them. And as I am a paying customer of LL I have every right to bitch when they do not deliver service comenserate with what I am paying.

Our Lindens, who art in the Labs, Hallowed be thy prims. Thy Grid-dom come, thy will be done, On sims, as it is in The Preview. Give us this day our daily crash, And forgive us our Spammery. do we need 4 "I hate Linden Labs" threads?
Cant we just get a "I hate LL" sticky or something? ------------------------------------- Don't get me wrong - I'm all for complaining about specific problems LL has caused. But thats within context of the issues. |

There are way too many variables when upgrades go live here and it isn't just here that this happens, when there are upgrades on WoW, there are problems, even though in Beta things looked ok.
When you then add the amount of user created content here, then there are even more variables and no matter how well they plan it, they're not going to be anywhere close to being able to really give it a good test until it goes live. |

Wave upon wave of demented adfarmers March cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream. Have you heard the news? The dogs are dead! You better stay home And do as you're told. Get out of the road if you want to grow old. |

*looks back at past updates that introduced intolerable packet loss for all, that introduced permissions exploits, that wiped several hundred sims clean of prims, that left the grid crippled for the rest of the week*
This one barely registers, it didn't even break anything or cause problems of any kind. People are just spoilt these days and complain when it takes two tries to log on .(Seriously though, this "failed update" was a breeze, past ones have been far, far worse) |

Faith can be held contrary to reason and despite evidence, so I suppose we can have as much faith in LL as we want.

I must have missed this "almost trashing the grid" event.

SL will be replaced just like all the virtual world ive been to,
they have problems built into SL that are not fixable the big one is the inventory server other worlds let you backup and save your creations so you wont lose them forever, the permissions here will not allow that... and running your own land on your own server is normal in other worlds i still have homes and citys i built in 1996 that are still online. secondlife cant even keep a forum running with out crashing. eventually there will be a 3Dinternet and Sl will not be there unless they trash this setup and start over. then it wont be secondlife it will be something new. my faith in SL is 0 ive lost 10,000+ items in 4 years maybe more ive lost count, but i do have fun here but i expect to lose everything eventualy and start over and hopefully in a better place. _____________________

I hope the information LL needs to fix the forums is not stored solely on the forums.

I have 100% faith in LL...
I have faith that any attempts to get help will result in LL blaming my computer, or telling me to clear cache. I have faith that calling the billing line will reselut in my partner getting hung up on. I have faith that inventory will vanish into the nether never to be seen again. I have faith that changes in code will make for a bumpy few days / weeks. But most of all I have faith that I will have more fun here in SL for a very long time to come. ![]() |

The funny thing was, I got a 503 the first time I tried to reply to this message! ![]() Anyhow, as I have stated previously, what LL are doing is ground-breaking, when SL v9.0 STABLE comes out, people will forget what was done to get to that point.
