Installed okay under XP, but the shortcut appears to do nothing. Here's the shortcut target:

"C:\Program Files\ShadowViewer\ShadowViewer.exe" --channel "Cool Viewer" --settings settings_1.23.xml --set SystemLanguage en-us

Any ideas? It's a GeForce 9800, and runs normal SL fine.

Just go back and go over the directions again, step by step. Most importantly make sure to have both rars selected and unrar them together. Works fine in XP with an 8800 GS.

I have this problem too.

Yep. Checked each step, and it's all there.

Not sure what you mean by this. The archive unRAR'd without a problem - if I'd only had one of the archive volumes, I'd have been prompted for the missing one. (I used IZArc, but I'd expect the same from any archiving utility.) Also, even if the archive had got only the first portion of the installer, and created a file, it wouldn't have been a valid EXE and so wouldn't have run. It did run, and ran through to the end - the problem is in running the resultant application using the generated shortcut.

I should also have mentioned that I looked for a log file in the Application Data sub-folder, but it had not even created one. Whatever's wrong, it's something pretty fundamental.

The shortcut looks ok, and it would not have been installed when you can't get the installer properly unpacked from the 2 archive files. So this part is fine.

The Application Data directory is only created when you run the viewer the first time. Obviously it crashed before that happend. The only guess I have it has to do with the graphics card/driver. Many people seem to have problems with 8800 GS cards.

Please try to update to the latest Nvidia driver, that is 182.50 (WHQL) or 185.68 (beta), and see if this helps.

Also please try if starting shadowviewer.exe directly does anything.

Decided to try this even though I doubt it will actually generate shadows with my card, but didn't get very far (on Linux) :

bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin: /usr/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.4.6/libstdc++.so.6: version `CXXABI_1.3.1' not found (required by bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin)
bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin: /usr/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.4.6/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.5' not found (required by bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin)
bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin: /usr/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.4.6/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (required by bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin)
bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin: /lib/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.7' not found (required by bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin)
bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin: /lib/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.8' not found (required by bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin)

I guess I could update gcc (which I've obviously been trying to avoid for a long time), but I'm a little puzzled how these references got into this binary but not the standard viewer. (But then I haven't built the viewer myself for many months.)

It's a 9800 GT; I've just upgraded the driver to 182.50, but that's made no difference. Again, it doesn't create an Application Data directory, just silently fails.

Now running the shadow viewer. It runs awesome! Why haven't they made this an option in the RC? Its crazy to have to find some 3rd party hack for an effect this great.

This is not a "third party" hack, it comes from the official code branch. It is a in pre-alpha stage, so it's not aimed to the generic public: did you figured i had to change the locale set of my PC to have it working? Plus it doesn't support antialiasing; plus many gfx cards doesn't work correctly with it. It's completely fair to NOT make this downloadable directly from "any" user, it would cause more confusion than anything; on the other side if you are experienced enough, you may compile the client yourself and try it out (it's not hided... it's in the repository).

Using a GTX280 and everything runs pretty much as smooth as before.

I don't think so, the render engine is far to be optimized, at the actual stage it is framerate killer, and the whole client is likely to have much debug code inside. On my moster i'm gonna have 50% frame drop on certain cirmustances (compared with the official client) ...it depends by the screen size you are using (im at 2560x1600), the view distance etc.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Series Processor (2327 MHz)
Memory: 3327 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 (Build 2600)
Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
Graphics Card: GeForce 9800 GT/PCI/SSE2
OpenGL Version: 2.1.2
That's a very similar setup to mine, and works, yet it ain't working here. Let's see what exactly I have:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz x4
Memory: 3.5GB
OS: Windows XP Home SP3
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT/PCI/SSE2, 1GB, OpenGL 3.0, driver Forceware 182.50
DirectX: 9.0c

OpenGL Extensions View, which I've not used before, lists core features up to 3.1; interestingly it reports an unsupported extension as being "shading language version 1.40". But why the viewer refuses to run at all - not even as far as creating a log file and displaying the login screen - is baffling. Even if the card & drivers didn't support an OpenGL feature required for the shadowing, you'd think it'd at least run.

Anyone anywhere working on taking this onto the Macintosh platform?

I'm using an Nvidia 9800 with Vista. It works ok but I can't run it wide open like I could with the standard viewer.

Also I noticed nothing happens when I enable View/Land Owners

Funny, funny, I'm rolling on the floor. You're running SL on a 400 MHz ARM with 64M RAM?

Exactly, it's a kind of preview of what eventually may come. And for it's current status it's working amazingly well on a range of different systems. Feel lucky if it does work for you and make some nice pics for the other 75% (I guess) who can't get it working :). It's still a long way to go, but as someone else wrote, it's kinda eye opener like windlight once was, to see what may be possible in the future.

Not to forget that all your reports *DO* get read and will go into development helping to improve the code. At least that's the feedback I got from LL :).

God, I hope not. Windlight screwed up prim-based avatars, blew away Runitai's lovely depth-sensitive water just a few months after it came in, blew away nighttime gamma, and it's still not saving and restoring personal settings after an update.

I did it already, running on HTC Touch Cruise (but overclocked).

The Cruise should give you a LM and snapshot on the spot. With the local wind and water temp in C and F. Pretty cool. Perhaps the shadows are a bit to small on the tiny display, but thats definitely the way to go. Will call HTC to give me a Cruise SW load for my Diamond tomorow and they better won't refuse *giggles* :cool:

R1 works fine for me; perfectly. R3 doesn't start at all.

@Dnali

Guess you also have a non-english Windows. That's what knocked out most. Please change your regional settings to use a decimal dot . instead of a comma ,

Will do, thanks Boy.

Oh, I am set to US English (I thought maybe I had it set to English (Canadian).
Drivers are current too.

(In case this is helpful, I'm running XP, nVidia 8800 Ultra, 3mghz Intel Quad)

Honestly I am blissfully happy with R1 and will just wait for better world to happen in time.

Well....there is still a small species of strange folks around, not many, and close to be extinct, that do all this for free :)

The 1.22 Cool Viewer installed beautifully, but the Shadow Viewer doesn't start at all, when I click the desktop shortcut it doesn't do anything. :(

I double checked my regional settings and I am set at US English/decimal point.

LOL! I have a TMobile SDA (HTC something). I won't give it up until it absolutely stops working.

I'm still having trouble rendering shadows and when you rez anything it turns into a plywood cube but other than that, it's running fine.
