More related links to speculate on: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwTcvk5IuB4 The same kind of rendering seen in the video linked by the OP, but inside a browser (demo by the CEO of Otoy). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bz7AukqqaDQ This shows a demo of a similar cityscape rendered in normals and a demo of "Lightstage" generated characters at supposedly 32 million polygons (note some of the images Jules references as "older" content are the familiar ones on the Otoy web site). The wireframe is so dense it looks like a B&W texture render. I can't tell if it's supposed to be real time, but the CEO is quoted as saying it will be ready in real time via "voxels" by the end of year. http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/08/11/liveplace-to-launch-photo-realistic-virtual-world-rendered-in-the-cloud/ This has an alleged quote from Jules Urbach on the tweaked and "leaked" video cited by the OP. I'm not sure if he's commenting on the same footage, but it sounds like he is. There are other videos and articles out there, but these are the three that stood out the most from the ones I looked at. If this information is valid, then I'd give at least some of the video footage a much better chance than 2% truth. It sounds like there will be more to come from Otoy, but I doubt it will involve user created content, not unless we have access to several hundred thousand dollars worth of lighting, capture, and processing hardware.

There's a white paper on the Otoy system at the bottom right of the page produced by clicking the GDC 2006 SPEECH link on the page at http://otoy.com/site/start.htm. It says it uses a P2P system, so user's machines become part o fthe network doing the rendering in the cloud. The speech announced in the Speech link supposedly occurred in March of 2006. Outback Online was also supposed to use some sort of P2P system. Remember Outback Online?

Realistic graphics and atmosphere, etc. I like. Realistic builds are a different story. I enjoy seeing reconstructions if they're good ones, but I wouldn't want a whole world that just duplicates RL. There'd be no point to it, I may as well just go outside and enjoy the actual thing. I'll have to look through the white paper, but that seems to defeat the purpose other than letting someone with a weak video card get better graphics performance. If your computer is still going to be doing work for rendering, may as well leave it as-is with server sending raw data and your computer renders it for your own viewing.

The same guy produced an earlier system called 3D Groove.
I went to that website and tried 5 or 6 of the free "Advergames". None of them appeared to be functional. Not to say 3D Groove is totally dsyfunctional, but it looks like perhaps the companies running the free games stopped running them.

From: Deira Llanfair I agree - and I really do not want my virtual world to be photo-realistic. I want the fantasy world of my imagination and I want to make animations in it. I did like the writing on the board bit though - I thought that was neat. Well I guess a lot of people will, and if that means Dragons and Furries could be photrealistic too, why not

I believe the P2P system that was supposedly going to power Outback Online is now supposedly going to power Vastpark, which makes me nervous for Vastpark.

From: Tegg Bode Well I guess a lot of people will, and if that means Dragons and Furries could be photrealistic too, why not Point taken - after all I like to be a photo-reaistic little pony. I'm all for really good graphics, but I also think you need to be scalable because not everyone will have the best graphics cards and unlimited broadband etc, etc. At least it is possible for people with low spec kit to use SL. I liked the Nurien avatar clothes very much - great natural movement in the skirt and the avatar animations were much, much better than the SL defaults. So LL need to keep on the ball here!!

Imagine the IP, general release and privacy issues of copying reality if a place like this becomes mainstream. "I made that brick!" "Those are Firestone tires" "Thats my car." "I designed that building." I feel somewhat invaded seeing my house and my car on google maps, imagine if Avatars can walk into your own real life house and settle in. That new cloaking device in last weeks news story might become popular.

Despite all it's problems, I think I will stick with SL. Why in the name of all the Gods would I want to see photorealistic world? If I want that, all I need to do is shut off SL and look around. Yes, I understand it has to do with our ever increasing technology and pushing the limits, but I just want my clunking old fantasy world that I helped to build.
I dont' want some corporation telling me what my world should look like...or what limited choices of things to wear, use, or buy. Good Grief! Don't we all get enough of that everyday in RL? I will keep my world where imaginations can soar and be what or who we want to be not dictated to be something we are not. I will keep my fantasy world of user-created content Thank You Very Much!

I would like to see near photorealism in SL, but with a wide range of effects, some of which we have already. This would enable better fantasy creations too. Imagine yourself, perhaps as a photorealistic human or wolf, walking round a railway station and bumping into Spongebob paddling in green slime in the station cafe.

Didn't the Beatles do a song about something like that?

Picture yourself in a cage in a sandbox With particles raining down from the skies Somebody calls you, you're lagged and can't answer A girl with vengeance in her eyes Physical prims telling you "yiff in hell" Bouncing down onto your head Look for the girl with the purple top on And she's gone Ruthy in the sky's a griefer Ruthy in the sky's a griefer Ruthy in the sky's a griefer Ahhhh! From: Conifer Dada Well, it has to be true - they needed to build it to make the video! How it performs on the net and what you'll be allowed to do in CitySpace remains to be seen. But the graphics and complexity is incredible. Roll on dynamic shadows in SL! ASAP! It doesn't have to be true: they make movies all the time without creating a real-time interactive environment.
