I just got an email stating... From: someone Currently you own land on Second Life's mainland. Mainland ownership in Second Life is restricted to Premium accountholders. Our system shows that your account is currently a Basic account. Please either upgrade to a premium account at https://secondlife.com/account/membership.php or sell your land to a premium resident. If neither action is taken by August 31st, 2008, Linden Lab may reclaim your land. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. Linden Lab Support As far as I can tell, the link leads to SL's website when I follow it. But it can't be true. Seriously? Is it true? I'm going to have to pay for tier AND premium now?

I've owned the parcel for over two years. Probably over three years now. It's in Magenta, part of the ancient mainland, the part that is so old, it doesn't have terraforming limitations.

did you recently downgrade your account to basic? To the best of my knowledge, you have to be a premium member to own land on the mainland.

and your a basic account? If you own land in SL you need to have a premium account unless of course you have bought land from an island/estate and not the mainland.

What if you or an alt that were premium once bought land, but then had a group take over the land with their tier contribution and you downgraded your account. Is that the kind of e mail one could expect in that case?

I've been a basic member for at least a year or two now.
When did this rule change happen?

From: Moleculor Satyr I'm going to have to pay for tier AND premium now? Seriously, I can't believe you're complaining that you will have to pay for something that thousands of other land owners already pay for. Isn't that unfair? You got a sweet deal back in the stone age, and now it's time to catch up. Welcome to the real SL. Personally, I think it's time due for this. Edit: Your profile says "Joined in 2004". It's been a little longer than 2 years... We are currently in the year 2008.

I was creating content in SL long before you'd even heard of it. I've been here since before private islands, people owning entire sims, custom animations, shapable prims, hell, back when I was in SL, land was released 'free range' and whomever got to it first got to own it. Free, or at L$1 per m2, I forget which. $15 a month for my small parcel, and now suddenly I have to pay for services I don't want in order to own that land?

This has been the case for at least three years. Probably more.

At some point, there were some "transitional" users who could hold land without being a Premium member. I'm not sure exactly how or why but it did happen. (They still had to pay tier on it though - US$5 for 512, since they didn't have the "base" 512 for being Premium.)

I was always under the impression that you needed to be a premium member to own mainland. . . . . .

I've been in SL since April of 2004 and you've always had to be a premium member to own land on the Mainland. Nothing has changed.
You pay the $9.95 a month and get 512 tier included with it. Then if you want to own more than 512 you pay additional tier.
Sorry that you've gotten away with it for 2 or 3 years. Just be thankful they're not asking for back payment!
I know that if you stop paying tier there was an automated process that would reclaim the land, but they've probably just gotten around to creating an automated process that checks to make sure the owner of the land is premium.
Next they're probably going to create an automated query that checks to make sure groups have enough donated tier to support the amount of land they own!

Paying for a year at once makes it only around $6us/month and you get a stipend of $300L a week (besides a 512) which offsets the cost, so it ends up only being around $2us/month if you save up and cash out the stipend.

I was just going for worst case scenario for the sake of the thread I've been on the $72/year plan since I started From: Beezle Warburton Paying for a year at once makes it only around $6us/month and you get a stipend of $300L a week (besides a 512) which offsets the cost, so it ends up only being around $2us/month if you save up and cash out the stipend.

*sigh* For those of you who doubt my word, here: http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/3117/secondlifeextortionwe0.jpgBought the land in 2004. Wasn't paying premium in 2007. Received the email in 2008. So. Owned the land for four years now, and for at least SOME of that time (not all of it, at one point you HAD to be a "premium" account, I believe) I've been just paying tier fees. Never heard of this rule before.

You can slightly better than break even with a premium. 300*52=15,600 I rent out my teir at 77 a week. 77*52=4004 So that's 19604/264=74.26 72 for yearly premium, so SL pays me 2.26 a year to play!
