I like my little hippo sign holder - he rides nicely on my back as I wander around the grid.

The hippo will always be SL's official mascot. LL may try to erase his existence, but the noble beast will live on in our hearts. Haven't OpenSim claimed it? It's all over their stuff. _____________________

I've got my sign and my shirt on and am at the Kuulaa NCI headquarters. I am alone so far as other protesters go, just as is the poor unemployed hippo, sitting in a room by itself with no company other than the Maytag repairman.
Back when it had the lucrative position of Linden Lab Easter egg, the hippo spent it's days splashing in the water, occasionally interrupting it's idyllic existence to type "Hippos" when an SL user accidentally (or otherwise) pressed the magic keystroke. Soon the hippo will have to put on a coat and tie and some shoes which are bound to be too tight, given the size and shape of hippo feet, and go look for a job. It will probably end up slinging burgers or serving as a greeter at Wal-Mart. Being a magical mascot Easter egg doesn't really look too good on a resume. New users will of course fail to grasp the importance of this piece of SL history. The hippo is likely to end up with the original scripting forum and the attachments that were the pictorial history of SL in these forums, in some cyber netherlands, never to be seen again. Unless of course we the people of SL rise up. just as we did during the SL Tea Party Rebellion, and demand in firm, unwavering and unequivocal tones that Linden Lab "Return Our Beloved Hippo!". _____________________

Alisha, that sign... holy crap....
![]() One of the major aspects of SL that I've always loved was the culture and history of it. The little in jokes that developed out of functionality quirks were the absolute best! I'm so glad you guys feel the same way! Let's keep it up, the JIRA is moving up in ranks with votes! I too was sad when they decided to axe Ruth, though only as the default. At least there are debug settings you can flip to restore her... though I will admit the particle cloud (which I call "Will-O'-the-Ruth" is also neat.I totally missed the default box on the head "fix." I feel ashamed to ask, but what were they fixing? What was the underlying quirk? I can't recall at the moment... I should know this... |

The default atachment point was the head, so if something was accidentally attached that wasn't meant to be, it went on the head - now it's changed to the hand.
I think it was just a bid to keep the embarrassment level low for new people so they don't flip out and quit. People (especially men) complained vociferously about being Ruthed, and I think that fell into the same "user embarrassment" category. I agree with you about the culture and history of Second Life, the rites of passage and day-to-day glitches included. I know it's not a common opinion, but I like the fact that there's some weirdness, unpredictability, magic, bizarre happenings, and so forth in our world. _____________________

SL Hippo history
http://secondlife.wikia.com/wiki/Hippo Note that February 15th is listed on that page as "SL National Hippo Day (with a link to /120/cd/9153/1.html)." Seems our timing is ripe! _____________________

I find that hippo rather disturbing. It kinda reminds me of Barney the big purple dinosaur. Barney is the devil.
Maybe we can leave that one in the cage when all the other ones are let out? _____________________
