edit: No, SL isn't for everyone. One must have enough mental aptitude to be able to download, install and operate the client - and I'm DAMN glad for it! QFT! I understand SL may not be everyone's cup of tea, but some of the "it's too hard" attitudes when one hasn't even tried it (or been on one day as with one of my friends) just floors me. I go to IRC about once every 3 months to keep my nick from expiring. The last time was last week and I chatted with a couple of my long-time friends there. One asked me how I liked SL, so I was telling her about it. She said, "Sounds interesting, but I like simple. I looked at the website and it looks too complicated." /me scratches head I told her if she wanted to reconsider and give it a try to let me know and I would give her tons of help...but now that I think about it, if someone has an "it's too hard" just by looking at the website attitude...why bother. *shrugs* _____________________

I think too many people maybe think that you do have to learn all of that at once. I have been in SL for almost 2 years now and I am just now starting to learn about scripting and more than basic 'create a box' building. I was totally amazed when one of my friends who has been in SL for four or five years had no idea how to rez a box and put something inside it. But she is extremely involved in the Relay for Life and similar activities, so has had no need apparently for that. That's one of the great things about SL, imo. People of such diverse interests can find enjoyment. When I first came to SL it seemed everyone on the forums were builders and I got the mistaken impression that since I didn't know how to build (at the time) and really had no interest in it (at the time), then I shouldn't be on SL. I was wrong ![]() _____________________

Also, what's up with their description of SL's intended purpose? "a place to share and offer to the companies the opportunity to study the behavior of users" Huh? Talk about missing the boat. Last I checked, my behavior in SL wasn't being "studied" by anyone, let alone such mysterious, faceless entities as "companies". Ah-HA! The "why so many surveys/college studies/questionnaires, etc." mystery has been solved! It's the people who planned to use SL for that purpose but realized the software had to be downloaded so came to the forums instead! _____________________

Second Life is definitely not a fiasco. We would have all left ages ago if it was.
Many fiascos have happened within SL, mainly created by us, the residents, with one or two created by LL as well, but SL itself could never be described that way. _____________________
