avg won't update, it takes 3 1/2 days to f'ing scan. Which has nothing to do with SL, but would explain why SL is crashing. Good luck getting that cleaned up! Trend Micro's FREE online virus scanner http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ |

Word of Advice:
Literally unplug your internet connection when scanning for a virus!! The lil' suckers can re-download themselves elsewhere when they detect you trying to delete them. Same goes for Spyware, etc. _____________________

A few more words of advice:
If you think you have a virus, you're better off formatting and reinstalling Windows. Seriously. Some virii these days are just too damned hard to get rid of, and none of the antivirus programs can really do a damned thing about it. Besides, it's just a useful thing to do with Windows every year or so. Damnit. If you have real-time scanning enabled, make sure to exclude your SL cache folder - if you don't, rezzing takes forever. |

More words of advice:
Stay away from porn sites and the related downloads. Stay away from all the peer-2-peer file sharing programs. Make sure your computer is up to par before you blame the client. |

Reformatting the hd doesn't work with all of them. A lot of the viruses are writing themselves into the boot sector of your harddrive nowadays, so they get themselves running in memory even before the OS is active...

Reformatting the hd doesn't work with all of them. A lot of the viruses are writing themselves into the boot sector of your harddrive nowadays, so they get themselves running in memory even before the OS is active... Don't most BIOSes scan for boot sector viruses? If a HD wipe and reformat can't fix it, what will??? Also, on reinstalling Windows: I have a LOT of applications. Every time I've done a clean install, I've had to not only reinstall the OS, but all the apps, too. AND their updates. It's darn near a two day process. Is there an easier way? _____________________

More words of advice: Stay away from porn sites and the related downloads. Stay away from all the peer-2-peer file sharing programs. Make sure your computer is up to par before you blame the client. Great advice for... about 4 years ago. The threat has moved far far away from porn sites these days - they just don't give a good rate of return for the guys trying to infect you, and the people making an honest buck out of naked pictures have no need of the bad rep that the infectors leave them with. (in fact, it's all upsaide down: the basic purpose of most viruses is identity theft, so that the perps can use your credit card to download... porn) The most risky sites now are smaller businesses with mom-n-pop web hosting who can't participate in the giant arms race, and - bizarrely enough - fake computer security package downloads! But the thing about P2P programs is spot on. It's a howling desert these days, populated with gibbering idiots. |

And as a professional tech, I agree that backing up your critical data, formating and deleting your partition and reinstalling is surest bet to get rid of the virus. Make sure you have AVG (Through I HIGHLY recoment Avast 4 Home for home users), Adaware, and Spybot Search and Destroy downloaded on a disk as well as any drivers you may need. If formating is not an option, then I second TrendMicro Housecall online scanner as well, it may well be that you antivirus has be crippled by the virus. Housecall may be able to get that much out and then you can disconect from the internet and retry AVG. |

Them being in the SL cache folder, do you visit websites that objects or profiles list/send you to? Edit: I missed the AVG part. That 'anti-' program loves to list many things as trojans when they're not. |
