I noticed something strange yesterday; I went to sell L$ and was looking at a quick-sale value of L$268/USD; now it's back down to L$258 or so... anyone know why we would see a 24-hour hiccup like that? Maybe LL released a bunch of L$ or something? There was a technical problem where some people couldn't buy L$ so old sales were piling up. _____________________

I can't claim any familiarity with this sort of investment, let alone this specific one, but my knee-jerk reaction is that if you believe that book value, I know a major international insurance and investment company you may be interested in. Its a good general rule to "not invest in something you don't understand". I don't understand insurance. I *do* understand rental property (the real kind, not the SL kind) having owned such for over 25 years. In particular, I have seen a number of the CLP properties in person, and they are of good physical quality. Real estate of all kinds is going down in value in the USA, and will probably continue to do so for a couple of more years. So the "book value" ($22 a share) is more than the "current sale value", and the "minimum value at the bottom of the market" will be even lower. So one question is if the current stock price ($4.20 a share) is a bargain vs the minimum expected value...thats a security of the investment issue. If a property owner has tenants which pay enough rent to cover expenses, though, the market price of the property does not matter so much. Just continue to collect rent, pay the expenses, and wait for the economy to recover. Now, SL real estate is too risky for my blood. Your underlying cost (tier) can be changed at any time on a whim - witness the Openspace/Homestead price increase. Also, the supply of real estate in SL, unlike real life, is not fixed. They can create more at will. Lindex trading, however, is pretty easy to understand. Buy at one price, sell at another, keep 0.2% profit, repeat lots of times. If the spread narrows too much, or the trade cycle takes too long to be worthwhile, just stop and cash out. |

Technical problems
04-18-2009 04:29
According to the Lindex Market data page, the min rate went to 258 yesterday, and yet the minimum amount at 259 never went below 10 million. So one of the following has happened:
(1) the orders are being reported incorrectly, (2) trades are happening at other than the best price, or (3) the market data page is wrong. |

Prices are not matched in the order that they are submitted. That is to say. If I put in a buy for 259 and you put in a buy for 259 an hour later. You could get filled before I do.
It wouldn't surprise me at all if when it gets down to the wire trades happen at different levels at the same time. _____________________

I can understand that orders *at a given price* may not be filled in strict order, due to how they match buy and sell orders. My large trades can start to be filled and take several hours to finish, while a small trade will get done faster, just cause it is smaller.
The wait time from submitting the order until it starts to be filled has always roughly matched the number of orders at that or a better price waiting to be filled. For example, if there are 60 million buy @ 269, it might take 3 days to complete, if there are 80 million, it would take 4 days. What I don't understand is orders being filled at 258, when there are lots of orders still at 259. That means people selling at 258 are getting a better price, while people willing to take 259 are being skipped over. The other side of that trade, people just buying with no set price, are having to pay a bit more than necessary. |

I saw the 259 rate go way under 10 million, it was at 3 or 4 the last time I looked yesterday. The lindex is functioning fine. _____________________

I'm guessing the 259s are being skipped over because they put in bids to sell at exactly 259, not "259 or best offer." The computer running the LindeX can't differentiate. |
