I just encountered a strange kind of verbose griefer at my place. I feel weird because I have never once ejected someone before. And this avatar wasn't being *that* disruptive, just saying oddly hostile things in chat. Do you think the avatar was really looking to start trouble, or just not communicating very well?

SL is full of weirdos. That's the only explanation I can come up with. I ejected a guy like this from the hangout a while back - same goofy attitude. he made no sense at all and was making everyone very unhappy and uncomfortable.
You did the right thing. Don't bother trying to analyze him.
Note to self: Whilst arranging for my own funeral and putting together a diplomatic mission to Avilion tonight, make sure to IM Madhu with some weird insult like, "I hope you bump your head on something moderately soft" or, "I hope you throw your shoulder out."

I wouldn't call that deliberate griefing. It was really poor communication that escalated into nasty rudeness.
I am reminded of the time I took a class in stand-up comedy. The teacher told us to have some techniques at the ready for handling hecklers because the audience is depending on the person on stage to maintain control.
That person was making you uncomfortable. Chances are he was making your patrons uncomfortable as well. I'd say its your job as owner of the cafe to remove him. Your cafe patrons are depending on you.
