Newbie with an annoying little thing.

Hello I am now to SL and am enjoying my self. I have a question that been bugging me.

When viewing my avatar I see my name above my head. Frequently others including myself have something else just above. How does one change that. Mine says "submission set free" I am running the RLV variant but that alone should not do that? How do I change it?

Side questions for fun.
I see the game is very Laggy. Sometimes crippling. Is there ways to improve or is it just something hopefully transient we have to live with?

What is above your name is a group title. You can change this by selecting "Groups" from your edit menu, click on "none" at the top of the groups list, then "activate."

Lag can be worse in crowded areas. Are you spending a lot of your time in busy infohubs or quieter areas? There was ways to minimize lag, though, like the weather, there are good days and bad days.

More bad than good lately. it seems the whole grid has been going through severe lag storms lately that range from mildly annoying (short, frequent periods where a sim's "net time" spikes, goes through the roof, and kills everything else, performance-wise) to completely debilitating. I am sincerely hoping it is something temporary and will go away following the server update rollouts this week.

When I join a group the first thing I do is deactivate it, if I remember to do so. This still leaves you in the group but doesn't advertise the fact. I really hate the title thing. That is one of things that prompted me to buy land instead of rent - so I could build on the land without having a silly plaque over my head.

I don't walk around in real life with the words "Second Life Geek" in glowing letters over my head . . .

You can turn off the group title display in preferences, you know. I'm not sure if it turns it off completely or not, but at least you won't have to look at it.

If you're running RLV, chances are you're frequenting regions with loads of scripts, and residents with scripted attachments coming and going. These regions are more prone increasing lag over time and need to be restarted about once a day. Sadly, there's nothing you can do about it.

You can always buy a bigger one.

That's nothing... when I was a noobie, I wandered around with "Infected" over my head for a week before I asked how to change it. Actually, at the time, I didn't know you could change it.

I love my group tags! Making up my own tags has been one of the most fun parts of having a group! (It is good to know how to change them/turn them off, though.)

There are a few things in SL that require a particular group tag to be active - building on group-owned land without having your stuff auto-returned, for example, or buying a gift from a group-members-only vendor. In that case, just open the groups menu, click on the group you want, and press the 'Active' button. (I think that's it, anyway.) Once you've done whatever, you can switch back to 'none' again.

They never are what you really want them to be about.

"Submission Set Free" is the group tag for Open Collar, I believe.

Two other things can float above your head besides your group tag.

One is the little glowing white dot that indicates you have Voice active. If you don't have it turned on, you won't see the dot, over your own head or over anyone else's.

Some people wear a "titler". This produces a title in small, usually colored text. You can write your own titles for it. One of the ones you most often see is "Click Me For Free $L". Some titlers are scripted to let other people give you a title. Sometimes you'll see something in chat like, "Evil Titler: Lindal needs a new title! Type /1'title' to give her one."

well i was watching him and he wasn't being naughty at the time. however, he was looking at some very naughty items for sale. at least he was wearing pants... with no visible attatchments.

Yeah, but it's usually the big ones that are the most annoying.

BTW, if you want to create your own group titles, it's just L$100 to create a group. Get at least one other avatar to join the group (because groups with only one member get deleted after a while -- that's the only way to delete a group, as far as I know).

You can have any number of titles to choose from, with just one group. You can change the titles at any time.
