Reporting 150L ANU survey to the university's Research Ethics Committee

I've emailed both the questionnaire's contact person and the Human Ethics Officer, pointing out that the way this survey is being conducted reflects poorly on the university. The response from the Office of Research Integrity took an impressive twelve minutes - they promise to look into it (although they do say that such investigations can take up to two months to complete) :)

Abuse reporting the threads for cross posting is fine.

However complaining to some ethics committee about it is far too extreme. And inciting others to complain with you is even worse.

From: Joshooah Lovenkraft
I'm really not trying to kill someone's academic career and I doubt a complaint like this would do so

And what if it does? Will you feel happy about that?

He is probably just a student so when the ethics committee suddenly receives hundreds of complaints about him, it wont be good.

Remember they ARE allowed to post surveys in these forums. Maybe you should get that changed here and then we will never again have to be subjected to surveys here.

Damn right!. This was not just a case of another in an endless stream of surveys. The survey poster was warned not to cross post again and yet 12 hours later they cross posted to more forums then they ever had. In other words, the poster was plainly saying FU to the forums and it's readers. Well I for one have no problem stating the same if the poster feels that way.

Since he is abusing the forums he should be banned from them.
I still don't agree with encouraging people to report him to an ethics committee to have him thrown out of university.

Nah you wouldn't get thrown out of university for something like that and it is not what I'm advocating. Reporting this activity is not necessarily meant to be of a punitive nature but to ensure that academic research done on the internet and in virtual worlds is done well.

No. Your sig is not the message. :) However, if it's deemed you're just posting messages so that people see your sig ... that's been done before.

The key here is intent. If you were sending messages with the content of your sig alone, that would def be considered spam.

LoL yet again i've been foiled by the TOS. I think the time has come for me to actually read them, then I will actually know what i'm talking about in future rather than just pretending.

*stretches* I agree with the ARing and the reporting to the ethics committee. Not because I want this person punished so badly that he's kicked outta college, but because I'd rather not have him graduating thinking this kind of things is "acceptable" as long as it's for the sake of "research."

However, if his "research" career falls through, he's got a bright future in telemarketing.

Dear all,

I am very sorry about the cross-posting for the Second-Life announcement.

I am a very junior research assistant. I am new to the forum environment. I don't know how to behave there. I deeply regret for my mistakes. I am sorry that I am unable to remove those messages. I will make sure it won't happen again.

I am very sorry for what I did.

Regards,
