Hello to everyone, I'm really desperate for (wow - so many things I could type now, but I'll try to stick to the subject!!) some help please. I quit playing SL some months ago now (yes, I know I'm a bad, bad person!) and the last time I managed to log on I set up 2 parcels of land for sale with a view to selling the last bit at the end. I sold one piece and have had various questions about the other parcel ever since, but I cannot log in to answer them/lower the price/abandon it or anything (gggrrrrr!). Have got 4 computers here although most of them are dying a slow death (my fault) and not one of them will log in (yes, I've downloaded any updates) without freezing and then messing up my connection entirely. Whilst there has been pleasant (not!) language floating in the air in my home, I'm now keen to find a way out of the expensive mess Can anyone please offer some advice? Is there a different way to access my land to adjust the price? I never even got round to advertising it. I shall now go and kick myself a few times (it will be a difficult job twisting my own leg round to do this, but I deserve it!) and hope that there is an answer. With many thanks, Dunce Twirly !

Twirly, you may want to try an alternate viewer for low powered computers such as metabolt which is non-graphics http://www.metabolt.net/(although I'm not sure if you can change land sales prices) also you can get back to people from outworld using zonkster.com

No. you have to login using one of the graphic viewers in order to change anything on your land settings. Try lowering all graphic settings to minimum on the Properties screen before you connect. Uncheck all settings on the left side. This will demand less from your computer and may give you enough time to change your land settings before you crash. Disable voice, music and video as well.

Uh, go to an internet cafe and sort it out there?
Or tell a friend your password and have them do it.

Um...I wouldn't tell a friend your password.....but there's got to be someone you know with a good computer that you could use just to do this. I temporarily loaded SL on my brothers laptop while I was out visiting him.....it was more because he wanted to see it......but before we left his house I simply uninstalled SL. I don't see why you couldn't do that with a friend or family member. I'm sort of thinking you wont be able to download SL onto an internet cafe PC.....they might sort of limit the types of things you can do to, or add to their computers LOL But ya never know......

From: Elanthius Flagstaff Uh, go to an internet cafe and sort it out there?
Or tell a friend your password and have them do it. Logging in through a possibly unsecure connection of an internet cafe or giving your password to another is not something that I would do, but if one was desperate enough, desperation can lead folks to make some unwise choices. I have seen over the years lots of people that use computers that dont know how to "use" them. Its like driving a car, you know how to start it and put gas in it so it can be moved, but can you check the oil? Can you change a flat? Can you replace the spark plugs? Or replace the motor? These are all examples of various levels of knowledge related to cars. One needs various levels or expertise like that for computers too. There are many explanations as to why your computer will not run SL. I see so many computers that are in such poor condition on the software level that its a wonder they even start up. A spyware/malware infected computer that is badly fragmented with hundreds and hundreds of incorrect registry entrys from various not properly uninstalled programs will want to make you throw it out the windoze. SL does not run good on low end equipment with the onboard graphics package. It will run but not good....usually manifests itself in ...LAG !! There are many programs out there that are very good for fixing what is wrong automatically. One that I use that is totally free and very good for non techies is ccleaner. Follow the instructions and it can fix minor problems you might have. Scan the computer for spyware and viruses. clean up the computer and keep your fingers crossed that by just doing that, it will love you once again. All of these are free cclean http://www.ccleaner.comspybot search and destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.htmlAntivirus http://free.avg.com/download?prd=afegood luck!

advertise the land for sale (here) in classifieds and maybe someone will buy it and then you'll be off the hook.

Thanking you all lots n lots!

Thanks sooo much to all of you for your useful tips and advice. I've tried a couple of computers, but no go there at all, one crashes before I can even get my password typed in (yep, I confess... twas my fault that particular pc died!), the other will load SL then halfway through allowing me in it comes up with an error message asking if I want to 'debug' to which I always say yes and always wonder why I bother The computer I'm using right now (and trying sooo hard not to make it ill like the others) is an old 'donkey' and I'm not sure if it has the capabilities to do anything on it ('cept, of course, mediocre internet access) so I'll have to try my last computer which probably has a painfully old copy of SL on it and is prone to crashing anyway no matter how hard I whip the little mouse that runs it!! I can't ask a friend to do it (I won't confess to having no friends at all!!) as I'm the Angel of Death when it comes to anything mechanical and would hate to break their property too So short of more 'pleasant' words escaping my lips, or abandoning the land entirely (not something I want to do as I've been paying monthly for a loooong time for it!), I'll have a go at some more of your ideas. Bestest, Twirly

I have heard it said before that one can install SL on a USB thumb drive and use that to run SL on an internet cafe or friends computer. I have not tried it so I don't know if it will work or not. Perhaps someone here can verify or refute this.
If your current computer ran SL at one time, then it is possible one of the alternative viewers might let you get back in. I would try those first. Perhaps someone else can give you a list of where you can get them. I have never used one.
Otherwise, it sounds like you have no choice but to ask an SL friend to log in with your password and do it for you. This is very risky, people have had their money and land stolen doing this. So it has to be someone you trust absolutely. Honestly this should be your last choice.

This search produced a number of threads that have information on alternative viewers

I'm in!!! THANKING EVERYONE
03-02-2009 09:12
I really do appreciate all the helpful... erm.... help! I'm in SL now (although it's such poooooor quality I can't tell if neighbouring land is sandy or snowy!) so somehow I'm going to adjust my land for sale and escape without pulling my hair out or biting nails (not my own.... any volunteers?!?! No? Thought not, lol). I've managed to have a brief look at land for sale (believe me, I'm stressing about crashing out and the minutes it takes per action I want to do!) and from what I've gathered land is very poor indeed - about LS$ 5-6.00 per square meter even in prime/good locations, is this right please? I want to shift nearly all my plot in Searobin which was a very pretty place last time I saw it, but my old laptop won't show me much detail at all (sob) so I can't even 'pretty' it up before selling it and can't tell what the neighbours have done to their land (it helps if it's all in keeping and I can't even tell if there is a dance floor nearby!). Thanks to you all again and hopefully in about 3 hours of serious teeth grinding, I'll have it for sale Bestest, Twirly

Don't know if or how it will work at an internet cafe.

I've installed and run SL at internet cafes all over the world. Just depends on the kind of place you're in. Some allow installs and some don't.
