Hmmm.. Never tried it, but I'd think it'd run slower than just running it from the hard drive?

We did have a thread about this -- last fall I think -- and someone did get it to work. I have been meaning to give it a try and just haven't yet.

From: Raudf Fox Hmmm.. Never tried it, but I'd think it'd run slower than just running it from the hard drive? Yeah, the issue is for folks that want to try and pop in to SL from a work computer or some other computer where they do not want to install it. It wouldn't help me as we have such tight blocking in place, I could not even connect.

I have SL on a flash drive that I use at work. Gets through the firewall without any trouble. I don't bother with the batch file. (just running it directly means that you get newbie popups every time)
I don't use it a lot because the graphics cards on most of our workstations don't have the video cards to run SL properly.

Can you get to the SL forums from work? I cannot get to anything related to SL from work. If I really decide I need to get into SL during the day, I remote to my home PC and log in -- performance going thru that channel can't be much worse than SL on a flash drive running on a PC at work that barely has enough memory to do my day to day job.

Lil We don't have any web sites blocked at work. Since it's a college, doing so would cause all sorts of mayhem involving freedom of speech and access to information, no matter how irrelevant We have an "acceptable use policy" which prohibits things like creating racist or obscene web sites on our servers, and having things on your screen that'd offend the person sitting next to you. Something like that. Besides, accessing SL and its forums, even the occasional Flickr site, is part of my job

From: LittleMe Jewell Oh yeah - I forgot about that part. /me pouts Just be glad your work place allows you to use flash drives. I've been to a few that disallow it. Besides, your sys admins know everywhere you're going online, what you're plugging in, and all sorts of things.

even if I could run it off a flash drive, big brother can monitor the bandwith and know i'm up to nothing that would contribute to what I'm supposed to accomplish.

I was thinking more along the lines of using this to check a new computer purchase, to determine how it would handle SL. My thinking is that it would be very handy for that.

I have SL on a flash drive. I use it to access SL from work, where we're not allowed to download anything. It does drop a cache folder out on the hard drive, I believe. And yes, it does run slower than usual. The host computer has to be capable of running SL.

This does work on a flash drive as I have been using a very comparable method for some time on my 8gb thumb. Performance does suffer a bit as information is gathered from the thumb drive instead of your hard drive. The slight slowdown in performance to me is acceptable. It only works with the main client and not the RC or other open source clients as the bat file on the link from the OP is setup to execute/run the file secondlife.exe. There is also a non graphical interface alternative I use if I just need to chat and that is Metabolt. It will run SL on old computers that will not run the full client.

SL on Flash

The problem is that it leaves files on the system drives, it is not contained on the thumb drive. I look every once in awhile for a U3 version of SL that will run entirely on the Flash Drive, but so far ...nada. Bhakta

From: Tod69 Talamasca Besides, your sys admins know everywhere you're going online, what you're plugging in, and all sorts of things. Tis why I use the browser to log back to my home computer if I want to access anything they might not approve of. Hell, I had to get special permission to be able to click the "translate this page" link in google because "when you are translating pages, it does not properly tell us what you are viewing" -- so Big Brother cannot watch as easily.
