From: Oryx Tempel Stay away from jobs for as long as you possibly can. They stink and you have to do them nearly every day for the rest of your life. My vote is to stay in academia; go for a Ph.D. That'll take forever and will give you an excuse to be a student till you're at least 30. QFT!!

From: Cael Merryman Yeah, right. Join the U.S. military, finish basic and AIT and get assigned to someplace in the world where 18 is considered way old and the weed is laced with dope. Keep 'em off SL...
Get real. If you think 18 is too young for SL, you have led a sheltered life. And do take a thought about the recent photos that got notoriety, the ones shared on the Internet by those not yet 18.
And this is NOT a recent phenomena. The U.S. had a bubble of middle class white comfort that everyone seems to think lasted forever, but was really from the end of the Korean conflict to the early 60s. At the beginning of the 1900s, you would be living on a farm, where you had beaucoup exposure to whelping and dying, and about 18 you would be looking to get married and have your own place, if possible. Full load of living early. And then there was the depression. The protected 18 year olds is a myth of the brief comfortable period post war, between reality on the farm and reality on the Internet, and continued primarily by parents that have no idea what their kids are really doing away at college.
Not sure about Europe, but the U.S. really does not have a history of our whelps being protected well into young adulthood. Considering how few actually join the military, your first point is pretty much useless. Yes I do agree with Brenda, let these snot nosed 18 year olds grow up a bit before they come around us adults. Just because they can post naked sex pictures on the internet does not make them mature. Let them get jobs like the 18 year old of 100 years ago. Let them pay a few bills. Wipe a few dirty baby butts. If you think the internet is reality, then you really are kidding yourself. The average 18, 19, and 20 year old today is over protected and whiny. I have heard way too many of them use the phrase "That isn't FAIR". Just because mommy and daddy always made things " FAIR", they think the whole world should be "FAIR".

Just because mommy and daddy always made things " FAIR", they think the whole world should be "FAIR". The point isn't when you should have to endure them - the age of maturity gets further from 18 every year I age. The point is, anyone that thinks that SL has anything to surprise a typical U.S. or, probably, European teenager of 18 is living in a bubble. There is nothing to protect them from. Spend half an hour in the back of a McDonald's and listen to the conversations. An 18 year old has nothing to fear from SL, except perhaps a lack of accuracy. Is it a good thing? Probably not, but I'm not the arbiter of bad or good in the world. And while it might seem great to isolate everyone without the same experience, that seems to me to be one of those 'bad' things.

From: Lear Cale First, it was humor, not serious.
Second, while it's true that minors can find porn on the internet, that doesn't mean it's a good thing or that opening SL up to kids would be a good thing. If you were trying to make a point there, you failed.
Third, being exposed to animal husbandry as a child is great. Being exposed to real, honest, committed human sexual relations (between your parents) as a child was a fact of life until relatively recently, and no doubt still is in much of the 3rd world, due to one room dwellings. Neither of these is remotely like the wild abandonment of sexuality in SL. Quite the contrary, they're real, committed, and with observable consequences. Once again, if you were trying to make a point, you missed the mark widely.
I'm sure there are good counter-arguments to banning minors from SL,. I'm not criticizing your viewpoint, only the arguments you used. Then I'll make it simple. Half an hour in the area of a bunch of 16-18 year olds in RL unbridled conversation makes it clear that there is little to surprise any of them and by 18, the average U.S. teenager has at least heard, if not seen, most of what SL has to 'offer'. The real underlying complaint seems to be that there are so many immature adults that we can't tell one from the other...

The OP isn't the one who needs protected. It's the people who go to the escort club in his picks and would prefer not to pick up a 15 year old.

Have you noticed that such people seem surprisingly unqualified for doing anything with unreal worlds also - perplexing that part to the OP: I applaud your maturity in seeing that main grid is not a place that is good for you or your friends right now. Good bye and good fortune in your RL activities

Hey Buring. Sad to hear that you are quitting, however if you choose to change your mind in the near future; you can join Teen Second Life (13-17 year olds) here: http://teen.secondlife.com/ or file a support ticket to Linden Lab to get started in Teen Second Life here: http://secondlife.com/support/. You will find Teen Second Life a great place to hang out and socialise. I've just transfered from the Teen Grid, last month. I do know what I'm talking about and I have great documentation to show to you of the Teen Grid via flickr here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/danielvoyager/. I wish you all the very best in whatever you choose to do. Good Luck. -DanV.

buring, good for you. see ya soon! just a lil teeny piece of advice: when you are done with high school, take a couple of years off and do some volunteer work(or travel if you have the funds). when you start college(if that's your goal), you will be better prepared for it as well as life afterwards. Good Luck with all of your endeavors

There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.
