Voice Beta Live!
Wednesday, March 28th, 2007 at 4:33 PM PDT by: Jeska Linden

We are pleased to announce that the new voice feature inside Second Life is ready for open beta testing! Read Joe’s initial voice announcement here.

Please note that you will need a headset microphone (or headphones and a stand-alone microphone) to use this feature. Also, your Second Life account will need to have been created by 2/19/07 in order to access the Beta Grid.

DOWNLOAD PAGE
Visit the below link to download the viewer (be sure to read the information before installing!):

http://secondlife.com/community/bhear.php

KNOWN ISSUES
Due to the nature of the Beta Grid being a significantly smaller subset of the Main Grid, there are some differences is how the system responds to your viewer. Your L$ balance on this grid may be different than on the Main Grid, and any transactions you undertake will not affect your actual L$ balance nor will you be able to take objects made or acquired on the Beta Grid back to the main Grid when you next login there.

There are a few other caveats around this initial build of the Voice Beta client:

1. You may fail to connect to voice the first time you login. If you’ve configured your microphone correctly but don’t see the speaking indicator within 20-30 seconds of launching the new viewer, please try re-logging or disabling and re-enabling voice from the Voice Chat tab in the Preferences panel. This should correct the issue.

2. You may not hear voice through your headphones, and/or may only hear it through your computer/laptop speakers. This is because your headphones need to be plugged in and configured before you launch the viewer. If you cannot hear voice through your headphones and they are plugged in, please close and re-open the viewer, leaving your headphones plugged in. This should correct the issue.

If you’re having other technical issues, be sure to read the Voice Beta Testing Technical FAQ.

VOICE ENABLED LOCATIONS
There are currently only a handful of regions with voice enabled on the Beta Grid (listed below). If you join the group “Voice Beta Testers” the landmarks for the following locations can be found in the Notices tab. We will be adding more voice enabled locations as the beta test continues.

Voice is currently enabled in the regions of: Abbotts, Lusk, Pulveria, Spaceport Alpha, Morris, Da Boom, Tehama and Balance. Also, the Teen Grid region Card is voice enabled.

GIVING FEEDBACK
Once you are in-world on the Beta Grid, please join the group “Voice Beta Testers” so that you can receive new notices about future builds and join a group IM to chat about your experiences.

Please report any bugs, problems, or observations by using the “Voice Beta” component in the Second Life Viewer section of public JIRA. We’re very interested in your feedback. We also plan on holding in-world feedback meetings, watch the Second Life Blog or the Voice Beta group notices for more information.

Thanks again for your participation!

It time to start singing and orating, eveybody. Ceera might need to get the dog a microphone.

Finally we will be able to give SL and LL the cussing out they so soundly deserve.

Just betting the crashing is due to the beta grids being on a bit less fancy of servers.

And the client chat is from a third party, not sl, its not even linked to the server, so Its unlikely the reason is due to that.

Probbably just the sudden surge of people trying to log on we got.

need to login in a special way...
03-29-2007 04:52
When I tried first, I got this message too... but then when I tried to login INTO a SPECIFIC region (ie: the ones that are listed that use voice) i got on...

so... in your preferences, under general, select "start location" to be: "<type region name>", then
press ok, go back to the login screen, and then enter:

Abbotts, Lusk, Pulveria, Spaceport Alpha, Morris, Da Boom, Tehama or Balance.

Pulveria, and Tehama seamed to work for me..

cheers

Yeah I worked that out myself too, manage to login to Balance, shame there was only 4-5 of us inworld at the time. I would have thought more people would be eager to try voice out *shrugs*

Fire Centaur, your signature image - sure it's tall enough?

The Aditi grid's behavior and performance last night was extremely bad.

Beta seems to be down or troubled for me at the moment. At least it wont' let me in.

another advantage for the popular people
03-29-2007 07:15
Another forum in which the loudest, most agressive and most charismatic will dominate. Yeah, we needed that.

Where else would all the beautiful popular people go if the Lindens didn’t extend yet another advantage to them? Thanks, LL!

Tried the logging in to Pulveria trick. Got as far as a long "loading clothing" status bar, eventually heard some snoring but still no visual, and then crashed. Tried it twice.

Well, the voice beta testers are safe from being deafened by my barking dog.

I double-checked the techincal specs on my original-issue Mac Mini, and it does NOT have any sort of audio input jack. Just an output jack for headphones or speakers. That means, at best, I would have to find and pay for a USB headset, which I would only use for the testing. No thanks.

I'll still go in to help test the experience for a deaf/mute Player who can only type. So if you see a three-tailed vixen in a Kimono wandering around in the Voice Beta, most likely around Lusk, remember she can't hear a thing you're saying aloud, and can only talk to you by typed chat.

Hummm. Maybe I should buy a bunny rabbit avatar. Rabbits hardly make any audible sounds at all anyway...

Ugh im still crashing after it logs me in, it gets as far as the "your world and clothing are still loading but people can see you fine" window. The loading screen when you open the program doesnt go away either. I really miss voice chatting!

Well, I got on the Voice Chat Beta, and hung out around some folks who said they were talking OK. I was in a voice-enabled area while people were talking around me, and I couldn't tell that they had Voice Chat at all. No icons visible on the menubar or on anyone I could see. No sounds, other than birds, wind and footsteps, or the streaming music for the parcel.

I can check or uncheck the personal checkbox to enable voice chat, and it makes no difference, as my Mac Mini has no audio-in jack. It appears I would have to connect a mike somehow via USB to get any indication that Voice Chat exists. Interestingly, the "Voice Enabled" Checkbox was automatically checked for me, even without a mike attached.

It just didn't work. For me, voice chat still does not exist.

And that is fine with me.

I asked in two locations if anyone could take a pic that showed the UI, so I could see what tags were or were not on people in a voice-enabled area. No one bothered, though one person did tell me that the voice-enabled people had a white dot by their names. Maybe LL actually listened to the screams of the non-voice crowd after all, and decided to mark voice users instead of those who refuse to use it.

It did seem that more people ignored me than usual, as they were apparently wrapped up with talking to one another. But I can't tell, as I couldn't tell who was talking or not.

You might need to just bug report that.

The viewer just can't tell how or even if a mic is connected (it could be mic in, it could be line-in in a weird set-up, wave-out for voice modulation, or USB, or something else entirely). As long as you have sound, you should be able to just turn it on and hear people talk.

I haven't tried the latest beta yet, but the previous ones didn't play very nicely with my firewall (it kept popping up that it was blocking the background voice proggie), although that didn't really impact voice at all, but maybe in your case it is.

The sims were so laggy for me on the beta grid. Voice was working, but it was rather choppy. Textures took forever to load even when I was all by myself. The little white dot is kind of an ugly indicator that voice is on for my avatar. I have a specific question about Windows Firewall. When I first installed the program, I got a notification (for the very first time dealing with any SL software) that a program named "dwTVC" was trying to connect to the internet. It had to be the beta grid software because it popped up as soon as I installed it. Did anyone else experience this?

One of my good friends in SL is deaf in RL. What's the SL world going to become like for her and others with hearing impairments once all the "cool" people are lagging the sims to death with voice chat?

Voice chat is a deaf persons nightmaire.
03-30-2007 17:50
As a deaf person, it has come to my attention that Voice chat is in testing here.
Im totaly against this. if this feature is added its going to be a nother way to Exclude all deaf or hearing impaired people. This means that people like me who can't hear will be left out of so many of the things we enjoy in SL.

1 being able to talk with everyone else and feel no different since we don't have that hearing person/deaf person communication gap.

2the lag and adveris affects. Im not a role player but this will efect the role players as well, in a not good way.

THis is not a good thing. Its also going to make an already lagfilled SL even more laggy.
Why add this there are voice programs such as skype and and those other voice programs people use that I can't remember the names of.

This is a feature SL really needs to leave out, if people want to voice chat let them use the voice chat programs don't make everyone else suffer, those who are deaf or hearing imparied or just those who don't want it.

On a final note we really don't need all the bundles of lag this will cause. SL is already lagy enough.

Lets leave this feature out of SL.

First off, I've got to deal with spam filling my chat log the whole time I'm in SL, so now we get to have that plus people fighting over each other in the voice chat as well? It's not sounding like a great thing, plus the lag issues.

However, even if all of the voice chat issues were resolved and it ran perfectly, it's still something I would like to see scrapped. Like Cinthya was saying in an earlier post, SL doesn't need a voice chat program that will exclude people who are deaf or hearing impaired. There are many voice chat programs out there that work great and take up almost no bandwidth. Teamspeak, Ventrilo, Skype, MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, etc. If people wish to talk to each other, let them use one of these and leave it out of SL.

SL needs work with it's stability issues first before LL starts incorporating more features that will compromise what little stability it currently has.
