From: Web Page - Animations only indicate when speaking has begun. They should continue until a person is done talking and then stop in a timely fashion.
- Add AGENT_WHISPERING|AGENT_TALKING|AGENT_SHOUTING to llGetAgentInfo()
- There should be a control like the stream and video indicators at the bottom of your screen (with volume controller and start stop button) so you can quickly and easily turn it on or off. A toggle on the volume to swap between mic and speaker settings would be nice ... mic volume seems to be beyond about 20% of all users on the beta grid.
- Voice IM should be possible. People should be able to send a voice request, which must be accepted. If this is accepted then spacial voicing will be disabled until the conversation is closed. Yes this is a complicated situation that can cause mass confusion if mistakes are made but important! The important thing to note is that any non-local voice communication should always begin with a request, and there has to be a clear way to switch between modes... perhaps separate "press to hold" buttons?
- Chat should be relative to avatar position, not camera position
In response to a few of your points: - Last time I used the voice chat beta client, animations happened randomly (1 of 3 per volume level) depending on how loud you talked, but they constantly triggered while talking. Many people were oblivious to these animations however, while others often spoke too softly to trigger the noticeable animations that medium volume gives you (the low volume animations were very, very subtile). The good news is that there was an announcement a while ago for a contest to design new speech animations. Hopefully the new set chosen for the default will be more expressive at lower volumes.
- An excellent idea. However I fear for the folks who do like voice chat, should they come in contact with those vehemently opposed and wearing gadgets to "silence" talkers (like some particle emitter that pops up a "Mute" bubble from Final Fantasy or some such).
- I believe the last time I was on (not with this new client, stupid flexiprims crash the client instantly glitch....) there was a global slider and a mute button for voice chat. A toggle to modify mic volume too though is genius.
- Voice IM was stated a long time ago as a planned feature, including group voice IM. Personally I'd like to see it being that whatever has focus gets your voice, with IMs being considered as right next to you so everyone has the same volume.
- There is an option in the preferences to have voice chat center around your avatar based on its facing, as well as around your avatar based on camera facing, and around your camera based on its facing. I personally am very much against the "based on camera and its facing" mode, as that gives rise to eavesdropping, which is a privacy nono.

I like voicechat in general... what I would like is the following though:
1) Push to talk as default - half the people won't know they can be heard if the log on... people that don't want to use voice and have laptops, will be heard without they knowing it.
2) Voice IM - that's obvious.
3) Option for seperate audio card for voice output - like Skype. Main game sound on speakers, voice on a USB headset for example. So in preferences, a choice of what audio cards to use for mic, voice out & game out. Reason? I want my surround setup for in game audio, but I prefer the headset for voice chats.

My Voice Chat Wishlist

I've posted this in a couple other places already but I think it's really important. These are listed in order of importance IMO. ***EVERYONE DEFAULTS TO MUTED IN VOICE CHAT*** This way you can choose who you want to listen to by right clicking on them and selecting an "unmute voice" option on the pie menu. I see a lot of people just turning off voice and never using it because of the clutter it can cause in populated areas. This would also help curb being verbally harassed. ***AUDIO NORMALIZATION*** To prevent pain caused by people that either eat their mic, don't know how to adjust volume or have feedback issues, the audio should be normalized at a tolerable level. ***VOICE MASKING*** Give the option to have your voice disguised if you worry about being stalked and/or recognized. Just for fun you could give the option of a chipmunk or giant voice.

I'm not terribly in favor of voice at all, but if it's going to be used, I'd like the option of being able to use it. However, as it stands right now, that option is closed to me because I use Linux. So for me, the one feature I'd most like to see is to have it working, period! If they can't get Vivox to support Linux, then they should cancel their deal with them and scrap the whole thing, or find another voice provider. I'd be willing to bet that one mention of scrapping the deal will bring Linux support from them faster than you can say "Binary Blob"!
I don't particularly like the idea of basing the voice support on a proprietary, patented voice codec in the first place. How about we just scrap it right now and use something open and standards compliant?

Considering how few people use Linux vs Macs and Windows I don't think that'll happen. Also, real life dictates that this setup will stay proprietary for a while. I guess them's the breaks!
