Here's been my SL experience since they introduced the gray nightmare:
http://www.slbbb.com/gallery/v/TextureProblems/ The pictures taken in that series were taken after being logged in the area for about 8 minutes, on a Road Runner Premium connection (3 megabit). _____________________

It doesn't look so grayt, does it? I am sorry to hear you have a similar problem. I have read that this problem has been solved a long time, but I think one has to take statements of that sort with a grayn of salt. Here is my current outfit. It seems somewhat appropriate. ![]() It's a gray suit with white piping. Gray is fine when it's by choice. This gray suit suits me a lot better than the gray loading textures. Let's just resign ourselves to the Grey Overlords. If we do so, they really should add animated, colored glows to the white outlines; it would give it a really cool retro-Tron look. Maybe they could rename the game, although they might get into some trouble with Disney's trademark lawyers.

farkin gray
03-26-2006 12:07
I hate that farkin gray. I've noticed that, sometimes, the gray texture will assume the color of the "prim-to-be" and you get colored squares with white outlines. Wheee...
LL's stated purpose for the gray is, if I remember: to better show geometry before geometry has fully loaded, to prevent users from being "trapped" inside geometry. Noble enough. But, why, God, WHY does the gray nightmare get applied to EVERYTHING, then? LAND? WATER? CLOUDS? PARTICLES?!?! How did we ever get "stuck" in these? Why the CRAP do I ever need to see gray waterfalls, terrain and clouds? WHY? HOW DOES THIS ADD VALUE TO THE SECOND LIFE EXPERIENCE? MAKE IT STOOOPPP!!!!! ok. The Lindens are obviously stone deaf to our cries against the gray. Fine. Then they won't hear me when I call for full-on reverse engineering of the client to determine if the gray can be over ridden locally. Let's fire up our hex editors and get to work... _____________________

I think it is time to settle the question of how to spell gray once and for all.
Presently you can spell gray gray or grey, either way is quite ok, it drives me nuts and spoils my day, one spelling ought to go away. I really don't like it when I look at my writing and find "gray" in one sentence and "grey" in the next. I suppose we could try contacting support@secondlife.com and ask them to eliminate this sore spot in the language. _____________________

LL's stated purpose for the gray is, if I remember: to better show geometry before geometry has fully loaded, to prevent users from being "trapped" inside geometry. Noble enough. . The glintercept program finds a PNG file that looks suspiciously like the gray texture with white outlines. A transparent rectangle with an opaque outline would serve to keep folks from running into buildings. I think this would be much less visually annoying than the gray one. The real solution is to reduce the amount of time the gray texture is displayed to below that which humans can perceive. I would appreciate it if you would try visiting the Cowell sim, which is east of Abbott. I don't get any noticeable grey textures there at all. _____________________

I'll visit Cowell. And I continue my cry against the gray being used for particles, water and clouds.
<cry> LINDEN LAB, USING THE GRAY ON PARTICLES, WATER AND CLOUDS LOOKS FUGLY AS SH-T AND DOES NOT SERVE THE STATED PURPOSE OF THE GRAY!!!! PLEASE STOP USING THE FUGLY GRAY FOR LOADING TEXTURES ON PARTICLES, WATER AND CLOUDS!!! </cry> _____________________

I didnt experience much gray there. Maybe it's the trees. Cowell has quite a few trees. Maybe they scrub gray from the air.

One might think, at first examination, that this would explain why I see so many gray textures with white outlines.
![]() Unfortunately, though, this was actually supposed to be a pair of blue sunglasses. They stayed this way for so long I began to suspect that I was the victim of a cruel practical joke. Well I suppose I was, in a way.... having to see gray textures with white outlines hundreds of times per session, every time you move any distance worth calling a distance, certainly qualifies as cruel. As jokes go, though, it's not one of the funniest ones. ![]() ![]() _____________________

Indeed it does.
What could be the problem? The grayness occurs on three different machines, and it occurs whether or not the router is involved. When the router is removed from the path, it doesn't matter whether the connection is made with the ethernet cable or the usb cable. Things worked fine before some revision, I forget what number at the moment. The grayness is getting worse. The computer works perfectly in all other aspects so far as I can tell. I don't have a choice of broadband provider that would involve a different path on my end. I can choose from Roadrunner, Earthlink, or AOL broadband, but they are all going to come in on the same cables. I don't know if the data would follow a different path across the country if I tried Earthlink or AOL. DSL access stops a short distance away and dispite receiving a zillion postcards badgering me to get BellSouth DSL over the years they still haven't made it possible for me to try it. I could rent a computer and see if SL worked better on a fourth computer. _____________________

I don't have anywhere near the amount of problems with grey loading textures as you do, so it HAS to be on your end. Are packets getting lost? I've read SL uses UDP for a lot of stuff, which is just stupid, so maybe its particularly bad with your connection or something.
