Can you summarize what exactly is different/added from the mainline viewer?

33 patches... Bug fixes, regressions fixes and a few new features. Please, see the patches list on the site (they each have a description of what they change).

Looks promising - does it still use fmod and kdu, or is it pure open source?

It uses fmod (free license as long as you don't sell the software using it) and you may add yourself libkdu.so to the bin/ directory to get the same jpg performances as the official viewer (it will even be slightly faster, because of the optimizer options used at compile time: see the provided make-SL script to find out what they are).

Henri ?

I get this error when starting :

./secondlife: line 98: 5946 Zwevende-punt uitzondering LD_LIBRARY_PATH="`pwd`"/lib:"`pwd`"/app_settings/mozilla-runtime-linux-i686:"${LD_LIBRARY_PATH}" $LL_WRAPPER bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin
*** Unclean shutdown. ***

Zwevende-punt uitzondering ( sorry, i'm Dutch ) would be roughly translated 'Floating-point exception' . Any suggestions ? Would love to try your enhanced version.

What processor are you trying to run it on ?... It has been compiled for i686 processors and over, meaning an i586 or equivalent (K6, for example) won't make it.

Let's see. lshw sez it's a :

*-cpu
description: CPU
product: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.13GHz

SL sees it as a :

->mCPUString: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.13GHz
->mCPUMhz: 2131

It's a Intel PIV Celeron. Is that excluded from that i686 range you mentioned ?

Hmm... No, the PIV Celeron is an i686 class CPU. But it looks like that a couple of libraries were missing from the lib/ directory of my package...
I am re-uploading a corrected package (CoolRelease_2), but in the mean time, you may try again by simply copying the libraries of the official viewer into the lib/ directory of the Cool SL viewer...

No, sorry. The viewer is compiled for generic i686, 32bits CPUs. It will run on a 64bits system as long as you launch it in 32bits mode.

Pretty strange... Is anyone else having floating point issues, please ? If yes, with which CPU ?

i tried the cooledition 1.18.4.3, and found serious texture problems, as in my avatar suddenly "wearing" the clothes texture for upper body, but inverted and rotated, and reduced to one of the rgb channels. imagine a white shirt with yellow hands groping your boobs and you get the idea.

Hmm.. come to think of it. Isn't a Celeron a CPU cheaper for lacking a FPU ? I remember such from the ol' 80486 days where my SX processor was a DX stripped of it's FPU ( which was only needed for stuff like Autocad in them days anyways..).

Maybe there is a compiler flag you can set during compile which ensues it runs on CPU's like mine too ?

Just my two cents here....

Strange... No such thing observed here (I test the viewer under two distros, Mandriva and Ubuntu)... Plus, but for one of Nicholaz' patches (used in a few others homebrew viewers), there is no change done to the texture code... Perhaps a library issue. Could you please give some details as to which environment is yours (and particularly the X11 version, and display drivers/graphic card) ?

Thanks.

No, Celerons also got a FPU.

Please, have a try by replacing the binary of the Cool SL Viewer v1.18.5.2 with the one in this archive:
http://sldev.free.fr/CoolSLViewer-i586-binary.tar.bz2
It has been compiled with less optimization options, and for an i586.

No, Celerons are cheaper because they have much less cache. Think Pentium 3 with half the L2 cache, so it has to go to RAM more often and slows things down. Pentium 4's also suffered through that design flaw, but the Pentium M and Core processors don't have it.

Ah.. thnx for the information and help. Still .. tried the other *.bin, but to no avail. I just have to conclude I lack the correct mobo, CPU and brains for this version. :S
