I am proposing that the forums be returned to there original state. It is in the interest of the formation and retention of the community as a whole to have a functioning and cohesive forum for the purpose of discussion, the creation of ideas, the creation of a semblance of versimilitude and the establishment a culture of openess and humanity. It is also an effort to retain and preserve a vital portion of the documented history of Second Life and the citizens who reside therein.
Without the ability to hold adult discussions at will, second life users are reduced to building gnomes working in a world which is growing too fast to promise that like minds will meet without a forum of open deliberation and intellectual dissertation. Linden Labs: Give us back our forums!

That's the point of the restructure, to squelch the complaining, criticism, and non-competetive, non dwell inducing, and float-competition related topics.

I vote YES on this petition to revert back to what we had. I actually vote to go way back to the structure before the last, as it was much simplier to use and had less market-speak(tm).

i almost feel trapped
06-22-2004 06:41
in a little grey room with no furniture and on the walls only a little screen to give me my excercises and keep me from thinking bad thoughts.

There are alot of people in SL who I've never really had the chance to meet in SL, but whom i've grown to know through the forums. Many people whos names and ideas are close to me, yet whos avatars to me are meager 32x32 icons.

To all of you im sorry if i don't get to talk to you much anymore. I suppose i'll still try and help out where i can... in the tech issues forum... but its a real shame that someone else has decided we don't deserve a chance to stand on a soap-box for a day, or jus mill about enjoying eacho thers company.

Not that the old forums didn't have problems, because they most certainly did. But an active community with problems is better than a deserted street with everyone locked in their rooms. At least to me.

Well I don't see the point of closing to reply the "Games, Contests and Challenges"

When I became a Mentor Char told me that I should not only post the event but follow up the next day with the winners. I have been doing so pretty faithfully since.

Now what? I was delighted to see the separation of "Games and Contests", and the "Educational & Instruction" from the general "Party" Forum. But I guess the contests go back with the partygoers?

Once again.

Consider this posting my digitial signature. My name and personal details, as is everyone elses, are on file with Linden Labs, which makes it a legally binding signature.

Not that that matters, sadly.

Lindens, this is insulting. You have taken away an important part of the community you seem to want to create in one fell swoop, and its loss will not be easily overcome, if at all. You built up a little good will with the 1.4 patch, but you've spent it, in spades, and more besides, with a lot of people now.

Excellent post Ishtar! I signed in the other forum as well. The simple fact of not knowing exactly where a thread like this should be posted goes a long way in showing a great example of the mistake made in redoing the forums.

Signed.

I have a feeling that the changes were well-intentioned and focussed on the need to present a positive image to potential customers. However, the forums served a useful purpose to existing customers too. Having no general forum is a disappointing loss, and the deletion of the thousands of scripting-related posts is painful.

I hope these can be restored.

I did say I wouldn't post on these forums any more until they were changed back, but obviously I need to make an exception here.

Please take this as my complete agreement with this petition.

I find this much more worrying than a simple matter of the forums, although that is serious enough. But without wishing to bang on the same drum over and over again (it's a pity I have to) I have seen other virtual worlds and message boards where the censoring of critical postings was the first step into totalitarianism.

In one moment all the loyalty I felt towards LL and Second Life has been largely destroyed. Perhaps I am over-sensitive to this kind of thing, but I have seen where it leads, and it's not a pleasant place.

I had thought that the Lindens' version of a benevolent dictatorship was the best method of government for sl; now I doubt that. I had enormous respect for them. Why does this always have to happen? It seems that all the great places on the internet eventually succumb to this kind of internal rot.

*sigh*

I have to agree with my old timer friends here -- Lindens, please allow us to actually have a general community discussion. These things are important to the whole community and eliminating a place for people to discuss the community as a whole, like the General Sl Discussion used to be, is a pretty back handed way of tidying them up. Forums aren't a marketing tool as much as they are an integral part of any online community. Give us back our general forum, at the least. Please and Thank You.

And I vote we just take over Hamlet's forum. What say you? :).

I used to love the forums, sure there was abuse but it needed to be dealt with, not just removed and forgotten!

All I have to say is something Pendari Lorentz already pointed out. The fact that there's not even a forum appropriate for this petition is a huge sign that the current forum structure is broken.

I'm sure the Lindens MUST be taking notice of the backlash going on.

this isn't like the last time the forums were restructured, that was just odd for awhile, but we got used to it and some of us ever preferred it. we settled down and got back to normal rather quickly.

this is not the same thing. we're obsessed with what's been done. announcements are no longer as heralded as they once were. fun times have been quickly fading as we all gather together as the community we are to raise up our voices to contest this travesty.

we shall not go quietly into that dark night!

The forums are still there - if you take the trouble to look in the GROUP FORUMS FOLDER.

WTF is C3PO supposed to be USEFUL for anyway, besides whining? Stupid piece of scrap metal would be more useful recycled as a toaster. But even that would suck, because who would want to listen to a whining wussy toaster? Is he gold plated? If that's the case he should just be melted down into gold ingots. Help the economy some, and stop being so damn useless you stupid bucket of bolts! R2 is 1,000 times more useful than your tin man ass, and he's shaped like a salt and pepper shaker FFS!
